The less invasive approaches of UMIF and MHL greatly preserved the flexion motion (more than 48 %) of the cervical spine compared with laminectomy, and the preserved motion mean the low-risk of postoperative spinal instability. UMIF and MHL also reduced the increased stress of annulus caused by ML, and the lesser stress will lower the risk of postoperative disc degeneration. The posterior bone elements play a slight role in spinal stability after removal of the attached ligaments.
Ghrelin is a multi-functional peptide, its role on cancer cell apoptosis remains controversial. The present study examined the effects and mechanisms of ghrelin on cisplatin-induced apoptosis in human breast cancer cells. It was identified that ghrelin inhibited apoptosis in MDA-MB-231 cells in vitro and reversed the expression of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl2) and Bcl2-associated X, and cleaved caspase-3 induced by cisplatin. Furthermore, ghrelin activated the phosphoinositide 3-kinases/Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (PI3K/Akt/mTOR) signaling pathway after cisplatin treatment. The effects of ghrelin on the cisplatin-induced apoptosis and PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling were reversed by the growth hormone secretagogue receptor small interfering RNA. The present study suggests that ghrelin may serve as a novel target for cisplatin resistance and a potential indicator of cisplatin sensitivity in breast cancer treatment.
Since coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) swept all over the world, several studies have shown the susceptibility of a patient with cancer to COVID-19. In this case, the removed glioblastoma multiforme (GBM)adjacent (GBM-A), GBM-peritumor and GBM-central (GBM-C) tissues from a convalescent patient of COVID-19, who also suffered from glioblastoma meanwhile, together with GBM-A and GBM tissues from a patient without COVID-19 history as negative controls, were used for RNA ISH, electron microscopy observing and immunohistochemical staining of ACE2 and the virus antigen (N protein). The results of RNA ISH, electron microscopy observing showed that SARS-CoV-2 directly infects some cells within human GBM tissues and SARS-CoV-2 in GBM-C tissue still exists even when it is cleared elsewhere. Immunohistochemical staining of ACE2 and N protein showed that the expressions of ACE2 are significantly higher in specimens, including GBM-C tissue from COVID-19 patient than other types of tissue. The unique phenomenon suggests that the surgical protection level should be upgraded even if the patient is in a convalescent period and the pharyngeal swab tests show negative results. Furthermore, more attention should be paid to confirm whether the shelter-like phenomenon happens in other malignancies due to the similar microenvironment and high expression of ACE2 in some malignancies.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
