ABSTRACT To investigate the first year's Russian learning for L2 learners, 50 Russian-majoring freshmen from two natural classes were surveyed. Results showed that (1) Russian was the first choice for more than half students, and their interest in learning foreign languages was their main reason for choosing Russian; (2) most students had no prior knowledge of Russian, and only a small number of students had watched Russian dramas and heard Russian songs before university; (3) all students wished to know more about Russia, nearly all students were willing to study in Russia as exchange students except a few students who were concerned about the cost; (4) most students learned Russian via intensive practices; (5) about half students preferred vivid, cheerful, and relaxing teaching styles; (6) most students planned to become interpreters or conduct international business after graduation, but a number of students still did not have a clear career plan. The results further our understanding of fresh beginners' L2 Russian learning. Based on the results, Russian teachers are suggested to improve their teaching from the following aspects: create an easy and pleasant learning atmosphere by using modern educational technology; try to introduce Russian society and culture in order to broaden № 3 (14), март, 2020 г. students' horizons; direct students to combine the Russian language with other specialties such as international trade in order to prepare highly-qualified and needed talents.
