Apesar da contribuição da agricultura familiar para geração de emprego e renda, os estabelecimentos agrícolas sofrem com a escassez de mão de obra provocada pela falta de sucessão familiar. Esse fenômeno tem consequências preocupantes para as cooperativas agropecuárias, particularmente aquelas que dependem da sucessão familiar para garantir o suprimento de matéria prima. Uma estratégia comum para promover sucessão familiar são os programas de educação cooperativa. O objetivo deste trabalho é explorar o impacto da educação cooperativa, no formato de curso de capacitação, sobre a sucessão familiar no Oeste de Santa Catarina. A pesquisa foi realizada em quatro municípios da região Oeste do estado: Águas de Chapecó, Caxambu do Sul, Planalto Alegre e São Carlos. A coleta de dados foi realizada com a aplicação de dois questionários, direcionados a dois grupos de jovens filhos de agricultores residentes na região do estudo e filiados a uma das maiores cooperativas agroindustriais do Sul do país. O primeiro grupo (n=20) realizou o curso de formação de jovens lideranças e sucessão familiar, oferecido pela cooperativa. O segundo grupo (n=20) não realizou o curso. Os resultados não permitem identificar uma contribuição significativa do curso de capacitação de jovens lideranças sobre a sucessão familiar na região estudada. Aparentemente, as condições encontradas pelos jovens são favoráveis à sua permanência no estabelecimento rural, independentemente de sua participação no curso de jovens lideranças e sucessão familiar. Também foi possível identificar baixa prevalência de mulheres, corroborando a outros trabalhos sobre êxodo de mulheres e masculinização rural.
