This paper describes the main statistical features of voice, data and video sources, defines a set of selection criteria for selecting source models for these sources, describes a number of relevant source models for representing these sources and recommends the best source models based on the results of the parameterisation of these models from measured data.

High speed switching nodes with high capacity suited for the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) require a highly parallel architecture in order to meet the requirements with respect to throughput and transfer delay. Therefore, multistage networks of the Banyan type seem to be a possible choice for the design of the switching fabric, because they can be operated without central control for the single data packets. To avoid congestion and packet loss in these single path networks, some buffering has to be done. In this paper we analyze different buffering strategies, where the buffers are located in the individual switching elements. The influence of the different strategies on the performance of the network is evaluated under equivalent conditions to allow a comparison of the results.

Interactive video services will be among the first broadband services to be offered to residential and business customers. This paper describes a Full Service Network architecture based on the Intelligent Network (IN) which supports a large variety of services, including video on demand and other multimedia services. ATM will be deployed on an end-to-end basis, allowing standardised signalling protocols to be used. The target solution, however, requires special call and connection handling capabilities such as multi-connection calls and call transfer which are not covered by the current status of B-ISDN signalling protocols. Thuefore, we introduce an alternative solution which is based on current standards and allows an evolution from a fast prototype implementation towards our target concept.
