Radio frequency identification (RFID) is frequently discussed as means to identify different products by reading its product codes in its respective transponders. Main topics are its use in logistics such as the administration of streams of goods in storage areas and in dealing with consumer goods. In this paper we discuss the transfer of this technology for the sector of belt haulage of mining products. KEYWORDS RFID, belt rip detection, conveyor belt.
INTRODUCTIONThe development of steel-reinforced conveyor belts evolved out of the needs in the early 1930's for belt transportation systems that could handle larger tonnages over longer distances. In 1942 [1] Goodyear introduced the first steel-reinforced conveyor belting system and showed to be superior to existing systems in terms of strength, spline efficiency, operating life, stretch and flexibility.
