This study investigates modes of vibration in brushless doubly fed machine and brushless doubly fed reluctance machine due to the interaction of its fundamental magnetic fields, via the bending forces they set up in the back iron. It is shown that the presence of two field components of different pole numbers leads to vibration components in addition to those that would be expected in single field machines such as the induction motor. Formulations for the frequencies and magnitudes of the expected vibration components are given and verified experimentally. It is shown that the strength of the vibration components is highly dependent on the choice of pole numbers in the machine, with some much worse than equivalent induction machines and some very similar. The methodology presented enables designers to determine whether their machines are likely to suffer from vibration problems in advance of construction, and to apply remedies where appropriate.

--The Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine (BDFM) is a brushless electrical generator which allows variable speed operation with a power converter rated at only a fraction of the machine rating. This paper details an example implementation of the BDFM in a medium-scale wind turbine. Details of a simplified design procedure based on electrical and magnetic loadings are given along with the results of tests on the manufactured machine. These show that a BDFM of the scale works as expected but that the 4/8 BDFM chosen was slower and thus larger than the turbine's original induction machine. The implementation of the turbine system is discussed, including the vector-based control scheme that ensures the BDFM operates at a demanded speed and the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) scheme that selects the rotor speed that extracts the most power from the incident wind conditions.

The goal of this study is to assess the construct validity of a preemployment test of honesty, the Phase II Profile, in relation to the personality traits measured by the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire. Of the four predetermined criteria, only the relationship to emotional stability was significant. Two of the 12 relationships expected to be nonsignificant were significant. The correlations obtained in this study and in two others were so low that the construct validity for the tests of honesty in relation to the chosen personality traits could not be confirmed.

The Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine (BDFM) is an electrical machine that allows brushless operation in many applications where the Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) is currently used. In recent years work on BDFM control means that the machine can now be run stably across its working range. However, little work has been done to define the working area in which BDFM can safely be operated without exceeding its material and stability limits. This paper sets out the theoretical backing for an operating chart of an ideal BDFM similar to that of the synchronous machine. It goes on to show that though the ideal chart gives the right form, non-ideal parameters (especially the finite magnetizing inductances) significantly effect the locations of the limits. Some preliminary experimental data obtained for a 225 frame size machine support the form of the chart. Finally it is shown how the operating chart can be used to chose appropriately sized converters for the BDFM.

Time-stepping finite element analysis of the BDFM for a specific load condition is shown to be a challenging problem because the excitation required cannot be predetermined and the BDFM is not open loops stable for all operating conditions. A simulation approach using feedback control to set the torque and stabilise the BDFM is presented together with implementation details. The performance of the simulation approach is demonstrated with an example and computed results are compared with measurements.
