5G Internet of Things (5G IoT), which is currently under the development by 3GPP, paves the way for connecting diverse categories of devices to the IoT via cellular networks. For battery-powered low-cost IoT devices, wake-up radio (WuR) appears as an eminent technique for prolonging the lifetime of such devices, thanks to its outstanding energy consumption performance. However, only a part of small-size battery-powered IoT devices are able to transmit to a cellular IoT base station (BS) directly. In the article, we present W2B-IoT, a prototype implementation of a WuR-based two-tier system, which bridges cellular IoT BS and WuR via a Bluetooth low energy (BLE)enabled Android smartphone. Such a WuR-enabled IoT device features a current consumption of merely 390 nA and a response time of 95 ms for decoding a wake-up call.
Recent reductions in the cost of computer hardware coupled with the enhanced functionality of a new generation of software products have extended the reach of computer technology into all levels and segments of the public administration community. Now that even the smallest town can afford a personal computer with which to maintain its accounts, all public administrators need to have the skills to use the computer productively. This essay outlines the state of computer applications in public administration and identifies trends in technology that will have an impact on the education and preparation of public administrators.
General TrendsThe new microprocessors yield desktop computing power greater than the power of mainframe computers of the mid-1970s. While operating systems designed to make full use of the new processors will not become available before 1988, and applications software that exploits their potential power will not become available until after that, the anticipated benefits of the next generation of equipment have begun to be defined. The chief enhancement of the personal computer will be the ability to perform multiple activities at the same time. The division of the actions of the computer into several sessions, called multitasking, will increase the productivity of users who must perform several tasks at once-like most managers in the public sector. The second major enhancement is likely to be improved connectivity between the personal workstation and the mainframe or minicomputer that serves as the organizational data repository and communications controller.
