After qualifying and a year in general practice, he joined the Royal Air Force and was posted to Sri Lanka, where he remained throughout the second world war. On returning home in 1946 he did short periods in general practice followed by various obstetric appointments, becoming a registrar at St James's Hospital, Leeds. He was appointed a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary in 1959. An enthusiastic golfer, he loved travel, sports, music, and the theatre. After retirement he lived in West Cork in Ireland in a house purchased years ago as a retreat from the stresses of work. He leaves a wife, Nuala.
