Electronic current flowing in a molecular electronic junction dissipates significant amounts of energy to vibrational degrees of freedom, straining and rupturing chemical bonds and often quickly destroying the integrity of the molecular device. The infamous mechanical instability of molecular electronic junctions critically limits performance and lifespan and raises questions as to the technological viability of single-molecule electronics. Here, we propose a practical scheme for cooling the molecular vibrational temperature via application of an AC voltage over a large, static operational DC voltage bias. Using nonequilibrium Green’s functions, we computed the viscosity and diffusion coefficient experienced by nuclei surrounded by a nonequilibrium ”sea” of periodically driven, current-carrying electrons. The effective molecular junction temperature is deduced by balancing the viscosity and diffusion coefficients. Our calculations show the opportunity of achieving in excess of 40% cooling of the molecular junction temperature while maintaining the same average current.

The interaction with time-dependent external fields, especially the interplay between timedependent driving and quantum correlations, changes the familiar picture of electron transport through nanoscale systems. Although the exact solution of the problem of AC quantum transport of noninteracting electrons has been known for more than two decades, the treatment of correlated particles presents a significant theoretical challenge. In this paper, using the perturbative separation of fast electron tunnelling and slow driving time-scales, we developed a practical approach for timedependent quantum transport with nonequilibrium Green's functions. The fast electronic dynamics is associated with relative time whilst the slow driving is related to the central time in the Green's functions. The ratio of characteristic electron tunneling time over the period of harmonic driving is used as a small parameter in the theory to obtain a convergent time-derivative expansions of the Green's functions. This enables the algebraic solution of the Kadanoff-Baym equations in Wigner space. Consequently, we produced analytical expressions for dynamical corrections to advanced, retarded, and lesser Green's functions, as well as an improved expression for AC electric current. The method developed is applicable to the general case of multi-channel electron transport through a correlated central region. The theory is applied to different transport scenarios: time-dependent transport through a driven single-resonant level is compared to exact results; and electron transport through a molecular junction described by the Holstein model with a time-oscillating voltage bias is also investigated.

Time-dependent driving influences the quantum and thermodynamic fluctuations of a system, changing the familiar physical picture of electronic noise which is an important source of information about the microscopic mechanism of quantum transport. Giving access to all cumulants of the current, the full counting statistics (FCS) is the powerful theoretical method to study fluctuations in nonequilibrium quantum systems. In this paper, we propose the application of FCS to consider periodic driven junctions. The combination of Floquet theory for time dynamics and nonequilibrium counting-field Green's functions enables the practical formulation of FCS for the system. The counting-field Green's functions are used to compute the moment generating function, allowing for the calculation of the time-averaged cumulants of the electronic current. The theory is illustrated using different transport scenarios in model systems.

We study the dynamics of two capacitively coupled quantum dots, each coupled to a lead. A Floquet Green's function approach described the system's dynamics, with the electron-electron interactions handled with the fluctuation-exchange approximation. While electrons cannot move between the separate sections of the device, energy transfer occurs with the periodic driving of one of the leads. This process was found to be explained with four stages. The energy transfer was also found to be sensitive to the driving frequency of the leads, with an optimal frequency corresponding to the optimal completion of the four stages of the identified process.
