We have described a method for selecting component for organic composites and we illustrate this with the case of a motorcycle helmet. This prototype software is able to select the matrix, the reinforcement, the architecture, the volume fraction of reinforcement, orientation of woven fibers, and the manufacturing process. It seems that genetic algorithms are very efficient for optimizing composite selection and much more rapid than simple screening. Further work could be done to increase the number of properties on which selection can be performed and also on the process database. It would be interesting to increase the number of attributes, especially economic and shape attributes. It would then be possible to estimate the process cost.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
