Le propos de cette étude est de rendre compte, à partir de plusieurs éclairages théoriques, des caractéristiques du tutorat en action. L’originalité du présent travail réside particulièrement dans l’observation directe et systématique d’un nombre conséquent de séances de tutorat dans deux sites de la recherche : les Universités de Bordeaux 2 et de Nantes. Ces observations concernent sept filières à Bordeaux 2 et trois filières à Nantes. En premier lieu, on analyse le travail des tuteurs : les tâches assumées par ces derniers et les caractéristiques majeures de leur activité. Par ailleurs, une analyse des offres de la part des tuteurs et des demandes de la part des tutorés est proposée dans différentes filières. Enfin, on recense les différentes formes d’interventions verbales et les styles pédagogiques adoptés par les tuteurs dans quatre composantes.
