Liposarcoma is one of the most common soft tissue sarcomas in adults, occurring in 15 to 20% of all patients with sarcoma. Primary liposarcoma of the stomach is rare. We report a case of patient with giant gastric liposarcoma who underwent surgery after a gastrointestinal bleeding. Preoperative hystopathological diagnosis was not established, even after three biopsy attempts. We discuss differential diagnosis, genetic causes, diagnosis strategies and treatment.
Intracranial germinomas (GE) are malignant neoplasms most commonly found in the suprasellar region, which may cause anterior and particularly posterior pituitary hormone deficits with central diabetes insipidus (DI). Differential diagnosis of pituitary stalk thickening includes granulomatous, inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic lesions. Although careful analysis of clinical, laboratory, and imaging findings may facilitate the diagnosis, transsphenoidal biopsy is indicated to confirm the disease, as the correct diagnosis directs the appropriate treatment.
Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is a highly aggressive B cell lymphoma, presenting in extranodal sites or as an acute leukemia. Three clinical variants of BL are recognized: endemic BL, sporadic BL and immunodeficiency associated BL. Sporadic BL is seen worldwide, mainly in children and young adults involving the abdominal organs mostly the ileocaecal area. Pancreatic involvement is rare. The authors report a unique case of abdominal Burkitt lymphoma, initially diagnosed and treated as acute pancreatitis. Clinically, the patient presented severe abdominal pain and vomiting. Imaging findings were suggestive of inflammatory involvement of the pancreas, heading treatment towards this hypothesis. Unfortunately, the patient died during the diagnostic work up, and the autopsy findings demonstrated advanced Burkitt lymphoma with extensive involvement of pancreatic parenchyma and other organs within the abdominal cavity. Once Burkitt lymphoma is a potentially curable disease, early diagnosis is crucial for better outcomes.
Objective: to estimate the association between exposure to air pollutants and hospital admissions for asthma. Methods: this is an ecological study of time series, which included individuals from 0 to10 years living in Sao Jose dos Campos, for the period 2004 to 2005.Data of hospitalizations for asthma were obtained from DATASUS. The data of ambient levels of particulate matter, sulfur dioxideand ozone were obtained from the Company of Technology of Environmental Sanitation (CETESB) and temperature and humidity from the Foundation for Science, Technology and Space Applications(FUNCATE). Lag models have been made from 0 to 7 days and analyzed by binary logistic regression, yielding odds ratios and their confidence intervals of 95% by SPSS 15.0. Results: there were 809admissions, ranging from 0 to 7. It was possible to identify an association of the particulate matterboth on the same day of exposure and the next third, fifth and sixth days with the admissions; sulfurdioxide was associated with hospitalizations in the first, second and third days after exposure andozone on the third day after exposure to gas. Thus, this study showed an association between airpollutants and asthma hospitalization in a medium-sized city.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
