Resumo Esse artigo aborda a relação das políticas sociais britânicas com as contradições de gênero e raça específicas do sistema capitalista e a maneira como este se desenvolveu naquela formação social. A partir do arcabouço da Teoria da Reprodução Social, traçamos essa relação desde a sua gênese, mostrando como a formulação e aplicação dessas políticas no começo do século XX ajudaram a cristalizar materialmente determinadas relações de gênero e concepções específicas de cidadania, nação e trabalho assalariado que na prática consagravam divisões internas à classe trabalhadora como um todo, instituindo papeis sociais hierarquizados entre os diferentes grupos subalternos.
O pós-guerra na Grã-Bretanha ficou marcado pela ascensão do Partido Trabalhista ao governo e pela estruturação do Estado de bem-estar social a partir de 1945. A conjuntura específica britânica levou ao desenvolvimento de estruturas inspiradas no corporativismo, como órgãos tripartites, compondo um modo de regulação especificamente adequado ao regime de acumulação do período. Esse trabalho visa apontar como a ascensão dos trabalhistas foi vital para a manutenção desse Estado, tanto por sua formação e desenvolvimento vinculado aos sindicatos, como pela ideologia dominante no interior de suas fileiras.
