O SARS-CoV-2 surgiu no final de 2019, na cidade de Wuhan, China, quando vários casos de um tipo de pneumonia grave foram relatados e com muitas mortes. A gravidade da doença está relacionada com diferentes fatores inerentes aos indivíduos infectados, incluindo aspectos referentes ao seu perfil de conhecimento sobre a COVID-19 e comportamento no autocuidado e prevenção. Desse modo, a identificação desses aspectos é imprescindível para proposições de estratégias no controle à educação em saúde. O objetivo do presente trabalho é caracterizar o perfil demográfico, o conhecimento e comportamento para prevenção da COVID-19 de moradores do bairro de Novo Eldorado, em Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ. Para realização da investigação foi feito um estudo transversal, com maiores de idade, utilizando um questionário adaptado de inquérito aplicado na China, complementado com questões demográficas e epidemiológicas, de modo a compreender aspectos do público-alvo. Os dados foram coletados entre julho e dezembro/2021, geridos por smartphones, a partir da plataforma REDCap que contribuiu também na análise das variáveis e descrição dos perfis sociais, de conhecimento e comportamento para prevenção da COVID-19. Dos 156 participantes, a idade média é de 53 (DP 2,9) anos, 115 (74%) mulheres, solteiras (48%), com ensino fundamental incompleto (54%), sendo 48% desempregados ou autônomos (28%). Possuem rendimento de cerca de um salário mínimo mensal (64%). 101 (65%) dos respondentes identificaram corretamente o SARS-cov2 como um vírus e 51% assinalaram que a transmissão é por via aérea. O uso de máscara é citado por 142 indivíduos (91%), quando perguntado sobre "como me devo proteger". Quanto ao conhecimento sobre os sintomas para COVID-19, a febre foi o mais citado, 104 (66,7%). O uso de máscaras de tecido com uma/duas camadas é prevalente (133/78%), sendo considerada a necessidade de troca frequente para limpeza. O isolamento social foi praticado por 89 (57%) dos indivíduos. O perfil demográfico dos moradores do Novo Eldorado é de mulheres solteiras, protestantes, com ensino fundamental incompleto, desempregadas, com renda mensal inferior ao salário mínimo. Sobre o conhecimento e comportamento para o autocuidado e preocupação com a contaminação de terceiros, os participantes do estudo relataram, em sua maioria, que a forma de transmissão é aérea e que utilizam máscara de pano, sendo essa que eles têm acesso. Verifica-se assim que estratégias de educação em saúde poderão minimizar a carência de informações a fim de promover a prevenção e autocuidado para COVID-19.
