Drought tolerance traits in genotypes from an upland rice core collectionAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate morphophysiological traits related to drought stress tolerance in genotypes from a thematic upland rice core collection, and to identify the most tolerant materials. One hundred upland rice genotypes were evaluated in experiments carried out with or without drought stress. The genotypes tended to increase the number of days to flowering (FLO) and to decrease plant height (ALT) under stress condition, but showed a great variation in behavior. Spikelet sterility (EST) was the most important trait for selection, in both growing conditions, because of its high negative correlation with yield. The number of tillers did not differ among genotypes, under no stress condition, but there was a significant difference under stress condition. The Ligeiro and Canela de Ferro genotypes showed low drought susceptibility indexes (SID), but low yields in both growing conditions; the Catetão, Jatobá, and Arroz do Maranhão materials had high productivity under stress and relatively low SID values. EST, FLO, ALT, and SID are morphophysiological traits related to drought tolerance, and the Catetão, Jatobá, and Arroz do Maranhão genotypes can be a good source of genes for drought tolerance in breeding programs.
Upland rice is cultivated mostly in Latin America and Africa by small farmers and in areas with risk of dry spells. This study evaluated morphophysiological mechanisms of upland rice associated to drought adaptation. A set of 25 upland rice genotypes were grown in a plant phenotyping platform during 2015 and 2017 under regular irrigation and water restriction. We evaluated morphophysiological traits in shoots (vegetative structures growth, gas exchange, water use efficiency, carboxylation efficiency, water status) and roots (length, surface area, volume and diameter), as well as agronomic traits (grain yield and its components). There was a reduction in grain yield by up to 54 % and 58 % in 2015 and 2017, respectively, under water deficit. Five upland rice genotypes with the best yield performances in both water treatments applied were recommended to the upland rice-breeding program: Bico Ganga, BRS Esmeralda, BRSMG Curinga, Guarani, and Rabo de Burro. In this study, morphophysiological traits associated to drought tolerance concerned the plant high capacity to save water in the leaves, low leaf water potential, high ability to reduce vegetative structures, high water use efficiency, high photosynthetic capacity, and improved capacity to absorb water from drying soil, either by osmotic adjustment or additional investment into the root system. Therefore, we concluded that different secondary traits contributed to drought tolerance and should be evaluated along with grain yield to improve efficiency of breeding selection.
Productive aspects of upland rice lines under water deficit ABSTRACTIn cerrado regions, during the rainy season, the occurrence of drought periods that compromise essential functions related to the production of upland rice is very common. In order to explore drought tolerant materials, this study aimed to evaluate the productive aspects of upland rice lines under water stress conditions. The experiment was conducted in two years (2007 and 2008) in the experimental research station of Universidade Federal do Tocantins, Gurupi, Tocantins, Brazil, evaluating 20 upland rice strains, consisting of two parents (Puteca and Chorinho) and 18 F7 strains selected from 186 materials obtained from crossings between the parents. The spikelets sterility, one hundred grains weight, yield and drought susceptibility index (DSI), were evaluated. The Chorinho, CNA 102, CNA 121, CNA 161, CNA 179, CNA 212 and CNA 236 materials were superior in comparison to the other ones, with lower DSI values and higher yields in water stress conditions. From the selection of these lines, genes (or groups of genes) determining this drought tolerance may be found, aiming at the future release of commercial cultivars.
ABSTRACT. The aim of this work is the construction of a genetic map and identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) that control characteristics of the root system of rice. We evaluated a F 2:3 population composed of 150 families from the cross between the varieties IAC 165 × BRS Primavera. Genotyping was performed in the F 2 population using 3,742 SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) markers. The evaluation of the root system in the F 3 population was performed through a large-scale phenotyping method based on image generation with a CI-600 root scanner and on quantification through the WinRhizo ® software. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with three replications performed under greenhouse. The variables analyzed were root length, root surface area and root volume at the depths of 5 to 25 cm and 25 to 45 cm. The SNP markers analysis allowed the construction of the genetic map with a full length of 1424 cM. The linkage group with the largest coverage area was number 3 with 270 cM (100 SNPs), followed by linkage group 1 with 249 cM (170 SNPs) and linkage group 2 with 163 cM (99 SNPs). The genetic analysis allowed the detection of QTLs for all the characteristics.
Combinations of species, cultivars, clones and structural arrangements are cited as possibilities that may determine the interactions between these system components and management, needing to be better understood, especially in relation to shading capacity. In this sense, the present study aims to evaluate the light interception of Eucalyptus spp. clones at different structural arrangements for integrated production systems. An experiment was installed in randomized blocks design with five replications, in factorial scheme 4 x 2. Four structural arrangements A1 = Triple row (3,5 x 3,5 x 3,5) + 88 m; A2 = Double row (3,5 x 3,5) + 44 m; A3 = Single row 4 x 22 m; and A4 = Single row 4 x 11 m and two hybrids clones of Eucalyptus urophylla x E. grandis. For the estimation of the luminosity characteristics, the CI-110 imager equipment was used for estimate: the leaf area index, the average leaf angle, the coefficient of transmission, the sunflecks and the photosynthetically active radiation. Data were analyzed by variance analysis and the averages of the values of characteristics were compared by the Tukey test at 5% probability. The single row arrangement A4 promoted to the clones the greater shading capacity, characterized by high values of leaf area index, lower values of photosynthetically active radiation and by the densification of the arrangement of the other rows of alleys.
