A Itália do século XIII era uma região bastante dinâmica em termos políticos e religiosos, um espaço de disputas entre diferentes instituições, grupos e personagens. Nas décadas de 1220 e 1230 houve um recrudescimento dos confrontos entre o imperador Frederico II e as comunas italianas, bem como das disputas políticas entre as cidades e no interior delas. Este cenário conflituoso representou uma oportunidade para a atuação do papado e de seus representantes na mediação de acordos que configuravam uma política de paz coordenada a partir de Roma.
Ao longo do século XIII, o papado se empenhou para consolidar uma nova disciplina para as canonizações. Uma série de procedimentos e critérios foram estabelecidos por diferentes pontífices nesse período com o intuito de padronizar as causas de canonização, além de garantir uma exclusividade para o bispo de Roma nos julgamentos sobre a santidade. A canonização de Domingos de Gusmão, em 1234, pelo papa Gregório IX, mesmo sendo um caso particular, é exemplar sobre esse processo histórico de afirmação do poder pontifício e de suas estratégias de atuação. O presente artigo realiza uma análise do discurso a partir das Atas dos Testemunhos de Bolonha, parte integrante do processo de canonização que resultou no reconhecimento da santidade do primeiro mestre geral da Ordem dos Frades Pregadores.
