O bairro do Salobrinho está sob administração do município de Ilhéus-BA e localiza-se no Km 16 entre os sítios urbanos de Itabuna e Ilhéus, adjacente às dependências da Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz. Neste trabalho buscou-se compreender os processos socioeconômicos que contribuíram para a consolidação do bairro Salobrinho, assim como foram consideradas as mudanças na paisagem e seus principais impactos em função da expansão habitacional, quantificando-a a partir dos dados de setores censitários do IBGE (2010). O mapeamento da expansão espacial do bairro foi realizado utilizando imagens de satélite Landsat-5 e Landsat-8 de 1990 e 2017. Os principais resultados da pesquisa atestam que após a fundação e estadualização da UESC, o Bairro do Salobrinho expandiu sua área habitada em aproximadamente 33%; e em 2010, a infraestrutura de saneamento básico atendia parcialmente às demandas do Bairro, porém a falta de investimentos públicos relacionados ao tratamento de esgoto doméstico podem gerar uma pressão crescente sobre o Rio Cachoeira, o qual já recebe grande carga de poluentes das cidades anteriores (Itabuna e Itapé) e dos bairros posteriores (Banco da Vitória e centro da cidade de Ilhéus).
A cidade de Ilhéus vem passando por um processo de urbanização acelerada nos últimos anos, e hoje notadamente em destaque a zona sul, o que pode tornar as áreas de praias mais frágeis e vulneráveis ambientalmente. Neste contexto, a questão da alteração da paisagem e, as implicações advindas dessas interferências são importantes, visto que a cidade assenta-se na planície costeira, ambiente naturalmente frágil que denota restrições de uso. E, assim, evidencia-se também a necessidade de estudos voltados a balneabilidade das praias, principalmente por envolver questões de saúde pública e, por vezes, ambientais e econômicas, principalmente, voltadas ao turismo. O objetivo desta pesquisa consistiu em analisar as fragilidades e potencialidades da zona Sul na cidade de Ilhéus-BA. Nesta perspectiva, buscaram-se entender a acelerada urbanização desta área, sobretudo, nas últimas duas décadas e as alterações advindas de diferentes usos do solo, cujas características físicas também diferem, assim como, as condições de balneabilidade das praias. Tais preocupações se ampliam à medida que Ilhéus tenta se firmar como uma cidade turística, cuja beleza cênica na zona sul, por exemplo, fomenta essa expectativa, que, no entanto, na falta de um adequado planejamento, o turismo pode vir somados à impactos nocivos ao meio, até mesmo de maneira a inviabilizar tais atividades.
