Following the 2009 update of the 2005 Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, Vietnam issued a new policy to ban smoking at workplaces and public places. This cross-sectional survey explored public attitudes toward this new regulation and provides evidence to inform future laws. Using stratified cluster sampling, 10 383 Vietnamese people older than 15 years were drawn from 11 142 selected households. Policies mandating "no smoking at workplaces" were supported by 88.7% of Vietnamese adults, whereas "no smoking in public places" and "increasing the tobacco tax" received less support. Educational level, knowledge of health effects, access to information on quitting and smoking health risks, smoking status, ethnicity, and region had significant associations with positive attitudes toward all 3 tobacco control policies. Adults belonging to the non-Kinh ethnic group, those who do not live in the Red river delta, people with lower educational levels, and current smokers should be targeted in tobacco control communication programs.
Background Clear-cell renal cell carcinomas (ccRCCs) are malignant tumors with high metastatic potential and resistance to treatments occurs almost constantly. Compared to primary tumors, there are still limited genomic data that has been obtained from metastatic samples. Methods We aimed to characterize metastatic ccRCC by way of whole-genome analyses of metastatic formalin-fixed samples, using OncoScan® technology. We identified a frequent, unexpected pL1575P NOTCH1 mutation which we set out to characterize for translational purposes. We thus implemented patient-derived xenografts from metastatic samples of human ccRCC to explore its clinical significance. Results We showed that pL1575P NOTCH1 mutation was an activating mutation, leading to the expression of NOTCH1-intracellular domain-active fragments in both cancer cells and tumor endothelial cells, suggesting a trans-differentiation of cancer cells into tumor micro-vessels. We demonstrated that this mutation could be used as a predictive biomarker of response to CB-103, a specific NOTCH1-intracellular domain inhibitor. One striking result was the considerable anti-angiogenic effect, coherent with the presence of NOTCH1 mutation in tumor micro-vessels. Conclusions We identified a frequent, unexpected pL1575P_c4724T_C NOTCH1 mutation as a new biomarker for ccRCC metastases, predictive of response to the CB103 NOTCH1-intracellular domain inhibitor.
The control of the interface and the adhesion process are key issues for the development of new application based on electrochromic materials. In this work the functionalization of an electrode’s surface through electroreduction of diazonium generated in situ from 4-(2,5-di-thiophen-2-yl-pyrrol-1-yl)-phenylamine (SNS-An) has been proposed. The synthesis of the aniline derivative SNS-An was performed and the electrografting was investigated by cyclic voltammetry on various electrodes. Then the organic thin film was fully characterized by several techniques and XPS analysis confirms the presence of an organic film based on the chemical composition of the starting monomer and allows an estimation of its thickness confirmed by AFM scratching measurements. Depending on the number of electrodeposition cycles, the thickness varies from 2 nm to 10 nm, which corresponds to a few grafted oligomers. In addition, the grafted film showed a good electrochemical stability depending on the scan rates up to 400 V/s and the electrochemical response of the modified electrode towards several redox probes showed that the attached layer acts as a conductive switch. Therefore, the electrode behaves as a barrier to electron transfer when the standard redox potential of the probe is below the layer switching potential, whereas the layer can be considered as transparent towards the electron transfer for redox probes with a redox potential above it.
