A landfill after going over its limit will be closed down and stop receiving waste. A matter of concern here is how to reuse the landfill site efficiently while there are many closed landfills have been transformed into new land uses in the world. The purpose of the study is to find the best land use of a closed‐landfill site after studying the characteristics of landfill site by using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method. The data used in the study were collected from surveys on 15 experts in three fields (environment, urban planning, and policy development) and the locals. The final results were based on their experience in evaluating the weight of criteria and alternatives in the same survey. To achieve the purpose of the study, three main criteria, six subcriteria, and five alternatives were identified as being relevant to the redevelopment of Dong Ngo landfill site, Bac Ninh province in Vietnam. Hierarchy of decision levels for Dong Ngo case study has been tested and developed from the data in reality and has successfully assessed the best use option as energy generation option for the landfill site under a scenario of decision making.
