Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) experiments and quantum chemical calculations (using density functional theory) on the interactions of chlorpyrifos (CPF), which is an intensively used pesticide, with a roughed silver nanoparticle surface were thoroughly investigated to study the inherent molecular mechanism. Ligand−cluster interaction geometries show that the CPF molecule is mainly adsorbed on the silver surface via both S atom and pyridine ring involving a covalent Ag•••S coordination as well as van der Waals physisorption. Raman vibrational modes of CPF are centered at 474, 632, 678, 1277, and 1551 cm −1 characterizing the P−O−C bending, PS stretching, Cl-ring mode, and pyridine ring stretching, respectively, which are all enhanced when CPF is adsorbed on a silver surface. The concentration-dependent effect of CPF on silver substrates has been reproduced for the first time by coordinating 2 and 3 CPF molecules on an Ag 20 silver cluster model simulated by DFT computations. The intensities of the characteristic peaks of CPF as shown in the calculated SERS spectra are increased by 2 and 3 times with respect to those of the CPF−Ag 20 complex, which indicate a positive influence of high analyst concentration on the SERS signal. This observation can be explained by the electron-donating effect of CPF upon adsorption. The latter donates an electron from its lone pair on S and Cl atoms and a π electron on the SP bond to silver atoms on the surface, and then the positive charge of silver surface is displaced to the CPF moiety via Ag•••S and Ag••• Cl contacts. The information obtained from the adsorption of CPF on silver by SERS is helpful to understand the molecular mechanism of adsorption process involving chlorpyrifos ligand coordinated on silver nanoparticle surfaces. It also contributes to design field detection methods for rapid screening and monitoring of pesticides in environment or agricultural products by using portable detection systems such as paper-based or fiber-based SERS sensors.

The antioxidant properties of 21 non-phenolic terpenoids contained in essential oil extracted from the buds of Cleistocalyx operculatus have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT)-based computational methods.

Antioxidant efficiency of all-trans-retinol has been studied on the basis of characteristic thermochemical properties using density functional theory. The influence of the solvent polarity has also been evaluated. It is found that retinol may act in parallel as an effective antioxidant via H atom donating as well as a pro-oxidant in yielding reactive hydroxyl radical. In fact, the lowest values of bond dissociation enthalpy were found at the C18-H and C18-OH positions. Retinol was also determined to be a good electron donor but bad acceptor in the single electron transfer (ET) reaction with hydroperoxyl (HOO) radical. In addition, potential energy surfaces of H atom transfer (HAT) and radical adduct formation (RAF) reactions between retinol and HOO radical were also investigated in the gas phase and in the solvent. The results demonstrated that the RAF mechanism was generally more predominant than ET and HAT ones. The most favored radical addition position was found at the C2═C3 double bond in the cyclohexenyl ring. Moreover, the radical scavenging reactivity via RAF reactions was strongly exergonic and thermodynamically feasible while the ET one was endergonic. Natural bond orbital analysis showed that the lone pairs of electrons on the oxygen atom of the HOO radical were donated to the unoccupied antibonding orbital of transferred H atom in HAT reactions. In contrast, in the case of RAF reactions, strong interactions between 2p orbitals on oxygen atoms of the radical and the π orbital of the double bond on the retinol molecule were recognized. The results obtained in this work were in agreement with previous experimental observations.

The radical scavenging capacities of four new cassaine diterpenoid amides including 3β-hydroxy­dinor­erythrosu­amide (1), 3β-acetoxy­dinor­erythrosu­amide (2), 3β-tigloyloxy­dinor­erythrosu­amide (3), and 6α-hydroxy­dinorcass­amide (4) present in leaf extract and four new cassaine diterpenoid amines namely erythro­formine A (5), erythro­formine B (6), 6α-hydroxy-nor-cassamine (7), and nor-erythrosu­amine (8) recently identified in the extract of the bark of Erythrophleum fordii were elucidated using density functional theory (DFT) method. Different thermochemical properties characterizing antioxidant potential including bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE), proton affinity (PA), and adiabatic ionization potential (IP) were calculated at the B3LYP/6-311G­(d,p) level of theory. Scavenging reaction mechanisms of cassaine diterpenes toward HOO• radical including formal hydrogen transfer (FHT; either hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) or proton coupled electron transfer (PCET)), radical adduct formation (RAF), single electron transfer (SET), and proton transfer (PT) were studied in the gas phase, water, and benzene. The potential energy profiles and kinetic calculations for the FHT and RAF reactions were calculated at 298.15 K. The results showed that all the studied compounds present strong antioxidant activity via HAT mechanism with BDEs varying from 69.4 to 77.9 kcal/mol. While solvents have only a slight effect on HAT and RAF mechanisms, SET and PT reactions are likely to occur in polar media. Among the studied compounds, 3 is the most reactive one both for HAT (H-abstraction at C7, ΔH −11.3 kcal/mol) and for RAF (radical addition at C13 = C15 bond, ΔH −5.2 kcal/mol) reactions. The rate constants of these reactions are also comparable with several referenced antioxidants such as Trolox and ascorbic acid.

Direct and indirect antioxidant activities of rosmarinic acid (RA) based on HOO˙/CH3OO˙ radical scavenging and Fe(iii)/Fe(ii) ion chelation were theoretically studied using density functional theory at the M05-2X/6-311++G(2df,2p) level of theory.
