Rotavirus A (RVA) strains, a leading cause of severe gastroenteritis in children worldwide, commonly possess the Wa or DS-1 genotype constellations. During a hospital-based study conducted in Hanoi, Vietnam, in the 2012-2013 rotavirus season, G1P[8] strains with a virtually identical short RNA migration pattern were detected in 20 (14%) of 141 rotavirus-positive samples. Two representatives of these strains were shown by whole-genome sequencing to be double-gene reassortants possessing the genotype constellation of G1-P[8]-I2-R2-C2-M2-A2-N2-T2-E2-H2. Sequencing and a database search revealed that these Vietnamese G1P[8] double-gene reassortant strains shared an immediate ancestor with a locally circulating G2P[4] strain in all of the inner-capsid and non-structural protein genes, whereas they were more closely related in the VP7 and VP4 genes to a Chinese G1P[8] strain and a Chinese G3P[8] strain, respectively, than to locally circulating G1P[8] strains. Despite the marked similarity between Japanese and Thai G1P[8] double-gene reassortant strains, phylogenetic analysis suggested that the Vietnamese and Japanese/Thai G1P[8] double-gene reassortant strains originated from independent reassortment events. Clinically, children infected with Vietnamese G1P[8] double-gene reassortant strains experienced severe diarrhoea, but it was not more severe than that in children infected with ordinary G1P[8] strains. In conclusion, Vietnamese G1P[8] double-gene reassortant strains originated from a locally circulating G2P[4] strain and caused severe diarrhoea, but there was no evidence of increased virulence.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1007/s00705-016-3155-6) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.
Algae biorefinery is gaining much attention for the sustainable production of value-added products (e.g., biofuels, protein supplements etc.) globally. The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between lipid production and bacteria growth by an initial microalgae Chlorella vulgaris density culture in seafood wastewater effluent (SWE). According to our results, the initial C. vulgaris concentration in SWE influenced lipid accumulation. The concentration ranged from 25–35 mg·L−1 which corresponds to SWE’s chemical oxygen demand concentration of 365.67 ± 3.45 mg·L−1. A higher microalgae growth rate and lipid content of 32.15 ± 1.45% was successfully attained. A higher lipid content, approximately double, was observed when compared to the control (16.8 ± 0.5%). Moreover, this study demonstrates that bacteria inhibited microalgae growth as the initial cell density stepped over 35 mg·L−1, which also affected lipid accumulation. This study shows an optimal lipid accumulation attained at moderate Chlorella vulgaris density culture in SWE. Hence, wastewater treatment incorporating microalgae culture could be greatly developed in the future to achieve a greener environment.
Background: Between 2016 and 2019, 265 cases of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection were reported in Vietnam, predominantly in southern Vietnam. In 2016, a case of ZIKV-associated microcephaly was confirmed in the Central Highlands, and several members of the infant's family were confirmed to be infected with ZIKV. The study aims to determine the level of immunity to ZIKV in the general population of the ZIKV epidemic region. Methods: A total of 879 serum samples were collected from 801 participants between January 2017 and July 2018, during and after the ZIKV epidemic in Vietnam. The samples were tested for anti-ZIKV immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG), and anti-dengue virus (DENV) IgG antibodies using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Plaque-reduction neutralization test (PRNT) for ZIKV was performed on all samples, and for DENV on the samples that ZIKV neutralizing antibody positive. Results: A total of 83 (10.3%) participants had anti-ZIKV IgM. Of the 83, 6 were confirmed to be ZIKV antibodies positive using PRNT and anti-ZIKV IgG ELISA. Of the 718 participants who were anti-ZIKV IgM negative, a further 3 cases were confirmed as positive for antibodies against ZIKV. Of the 9 participants with ZIKV infection, 5 lived in the same village as the infant with ZIKV-associated microcephaly and the other 4 lived in 2 neighboring communes. Repeat samples were collected from the 83 ZIKV IgM positive participants 1.5 years after the first collection. No new cases of ZIKV infection were detected. In addition, 2 of 3 participants with anti-ZIKV NS1 IgG demonstrated a 4-to 8-fold increase in ZIKV neutralizing antibody titer.
