In this study, we report on the known Artemia habitats worldwide. Recent literature information is incorporated about the taxonomic status of the various populations studied. The genus is composed of di‐, tri‐, tetra‐ and pentaploid parthenogenetic populations and of the following bisexual species: A. franciscana franciscana, A. franciscana monica, A. franciscana sp., A. persimilis, A. salina, A. urmiana, A. sinica and A. sp. from Kazakhstan. The problems of characterizing new brine shrimp populations are discussed. In view of the great importance of Artemia as part of the live food chain for the culture of fish and shellfish larvae and the present cyst shortage from the market, the need for commercial exploitation and development of new Artemia sources is now, more than ever, necessary.

Aim  We focus on the biogeographical role of the Balkan Peninsula as a glacial refugium and source of northward post‐glacial dispersal for many European taxa. Specifically, we analysed the genetic structure and variation of wild boar (Sus scrofa) samples primarily from Greece, a region that has repeatedly served as a glacial refugium within the Balkan Peninsula. Location  Continental Greece, the Aegean island of Samos and Bulgaria. Methods  We analysed wild boar samples from 18 localities. Samples from common domestic breeds were also examined to take into account interactions between wild and domesticated animals. Phylogenetic analyses were carried out on a 637‐bp fragment of the mitochondrial DNA control region in 200 wild boar and 27 domestic pigs. The sequences were also compared with 791 Eurasian wild boar and domestic pig D‐loop sequences obtained from GenBank. Results  Ninety‐four haplotypes were identified in the European wild boar data set, of which 68 were found in the Balkan samples and assigned to two previously described clades: the E1 European and Near Eastern clades. All of the continental samples clustered in the E1 clade and the samples from Samos fell into the Near Eastern clade, consistent with the island’s proximity to Asia Minor. Intriguingly, 62 novel haplotypes were identified and are found exclusively in the Balkans. Only six haplotypes were shared between wild boar and domestic pigs. Main conclusions  Our data reveal numerous novel and geographically restricted haplotypes in wild boar populations, suggesting the presence of separate refugia in the Balkans. Our analyses support the hypothesis of a post‐glacial wild boar expansion consistent with the leading edge model, north and west from modern day Greece, and suggest little maternal introgression of Near Eastern and domestic haplotypes into wild Balkan populations.

Two Artemia populations, a bisexual from San Francisco Bay (California, USA) and a parthenogenetic from Tanggu area (Tianjin province, People's Republic of China) are assayed for their tolerance and fitness in various salinity levels . This study was carried out under laboratory conditions where salinity effects upon special characteristics of the two Artemia populations, such as survival, growth rate, maturation, morphology, fecundity and life duration, were recorded . This evaluation revealed that the two populations examined exhibit significant differences in their response against elevated salinity levels . Furthermore, specific biometric parameters can be a useful tool for the discrimination and/or determination of their distribution in a mixed population, which, in fact, is the case in Tanggu salt works. Artemia franciscana seems to be a more effective colonizer at higher salinities . The data presented in this study may generate useful suggestions for proper management of the solar saltworks at Tanggu although further experimentation is needed .

The genetic structure of Silurus glanis (Europe's largest freshwater fish species) across most of its natural distribution was investigated using 10 microsatellite loci. The revealed levels of genetic diversity were much higher than previous allozyme and restriction fragment length polymorphism mitochondrial DNA analyses had shown; relative levels of variability among populations were however, in good agreement with the previous studies. Populations from large basins (Volga and Danube rivers) were the most polymorphic, while samples from the smaller Greek rivers, which are more prone to genetic bottleneck, exhibited the lowest levels of genetic diversity. Microsatellite multilocus genotyping permitted the assignment of individual fish to their population of origin with a score as high as 98.3%. Despite the great genetic differentiation of S. glanis populations, no consistent pattern of geographical structuring was revealed, in contrast to previous studies of European freshwater fish species. A model of isolation by distance seems more probable and a hypothesis of recent dispersion from only one glacial refugium is proposed. The discovery of the highest levels of microsatellite and mitochondrial diversity in the Volga sample and the presence of river connections, during the Pleistocene, between this area and all major areas of the present catfish distribution, place this refugium around the Ponto-Caspian region. Combining these data with those from previous studies, a number of markers are now available to monitor wild and hatchery populations even at the individual level.
