Este artigo enfatiza a melancolia na cidade de São Paulo entre as décadas de 1920 a 1940, como possibilidade de análise da história da doença na fabricação dos espaços, no caso, recuperados a partir de diagnósticos médicos presentes no manual Psiquiatria Clínica e Forense organizado por Antonio Carlos Pacheco e Silva. Por intermédio da História dos Sentimentos a partir de Sônia A. Siqueira, onde os sentimentos são tratados como indícios históricos e sociais, destacam-se subjetividades compartilhadas nos casos clínicos descritos nos diagnósticos de melancolia. A análise demonstra a influência das transformações urbanas no discurso médico sobre a melancolia, vinculando a doença e modernização da cidade, a doença como decorrente da vida moderna.
O artigo analisa publicações em língua portuguesa realizadas entre os anos de 2003 e 2019 acerca do psiquiatra paulistano e intelectual da medicina psiquiátrica brasileira Antonio Carlos Pacheco e Silva. O levantamento realizado evidencia inicialmente uma diminuta produção acadêmica sobre o intelectual, porém, em expansão, dado ao aumento de interesse por pesquisadores vinculados a programas de pós-graduação de universidades localizadas no Estado de São Paulo. Ao relacionar a trajetória intelectual do influente psiquiatra com o mapeamento dos estudos recentes sobre o médico, os resultados desvelaram as preocupações eugênicas e higienistas como centrais, além de projetar o ideal identitário brasileiro a partir da paulistanidade. Os desdobramentos indicam que o intelectual avaliava a miscigenação como doença e divulgava teorias organicistas como organizadoras do social.
