This paper presents detailed instructions about the development of an odometer, designed and inspired by a Leonardo da Vinci illustration, considering a reverse engineering process. The proposal is part of a teaching-research-extension activity of the Tutorial Education Program in Mechanical Engineering at "Universidade Federal Fluminense", called "Máquinas Antigas". It was treated from the historical aspects of the idealization of the machine, including its functionalities, to the development of a mechanical project, considering dimensioning and materials choice, compatible with the one outlined by Leonardo da Vinci.
