This paper outlines the current understanding of solar flares, mainly focused on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processes responsible for producing a flare. Observations show that flares are one of the most explosive phenomena in the atmosphere of the Sun, releasing a huge amount of energy up to about 10 32 erg on the timescale of hours. Flares involve the heating of plasma, mass ejection, and particle acceleration that generates high-energy particles. The key physical processes for producing a flare are: the emergence of magnetic field from the solar interior to the solar atmosphere (flux emergence), local enhancement of electric current in the corona (formation of a current sheet), and rapid dissipation of electric current (magnetic reconnection) that causes shock heating, mass ejection, and particle acceleration. The evolution toward the onset of a flare is rather quasi-static when free energy is accumulated in the form of coronal electric current (field-aligned current, more precisely), while the dissipation of coronal current proceeds rapidly, producing various dynamic events that affect lower atmospheres such as the chromosphere and photosphere. Flares manifest such rapid dissipation of coronal current, and their theoretical modeling has been developed in accordance with observations, in which numerical simulations proved to be a strong tool reproducing the time-dependent, nonlinear evolution of a flare. We review the models proposed to explain the physical mechanism of flares, giving an comprehensive explanation of the key processes mentioned above. We start with basic properties of flares, then go into the details of energy build-up, release and transport in flares where magnetic reconnection works as the central engine to produce a flare.

Hinode/Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) observations reveal two new dynamic modes in quiescent solar prominences: large-scale (20-50 Mm) "arches" or "bubbles" that "inflate" from below into prominences, and smaller-scale (2-6 Mm) dark turbulent upflows. These novel dynamics are related in that they are always dark in visible-light spectral bands, they rise through the bright prominence emission with approximately constant speeds, and the small-scale upflows are sometimes observed to emanate from the top of the larger bubbles. Here we present detailed kinematic measurements of the small-scale turbulent upflows seen in several prominences in the SOT database. The dark upflows typically initiate vertically from 5 to 10 Mm wide dark cavities between the bottom of the prominence and the top of the chromospheric spicule layer. Small perturbations on the order of 1 Mm or less in size grow on the upper boundaries of cavities to generate plumes up to 4-6 Mm across at their largest widths. All plumes develop highly turbulent profiles, including occasional Kelvin-Helmholtz vortex "roll-up" of the leading edge. The flows typically rise 10-15 Mm before decelerating to equilibrium. We measure the flowfield characteristics with a manual tracing method and with the Nonlinear Affine Velocity Estimator (NAVE) "optical flow" code to derive velocity, acceleration, lifetime, and height data for several representative plumes. Maximum initial speeds are in the range of 20-30 km s −1 , which is supersonic for a ∼10,000 K plasma. The plumes decelerate in the final few Mm of their trajectories resulting in mean ascent speeds of 13-17 km s −1. Typical lifetimes range from 300 to 1000 s (∼5-15 minutes). The area growth rate of the plumes (observed as two-dimensional objects in the plane of the sky) is initially linear and ranges from 20,000 to 30,000 km 2 s −1 reaching maximum projected areas from 2 to 15 Mm 2. Maximum contrast of the dark flows relative to the bright prominence plasma in SOT images is negative and ranges from −10% for smaller flows to −50% for larger flows. Passive scalar "cork movies" derived from NAVE measurements show that prominence plasma is entrained by the upflows, helping to counter the ubiquitous downflow streams in the prominence. Plume formation shows no clear temporal periodicity. However, it is common to find "active cavities" beneath prominences that can spawn many upflows in succession before going dormant. The mean flow recurrence time in these active locations is roughly 300-500 s (5-8 minutes). Locations remain active on timescales of tens of minutes up to several hours. Using a column density ratio measurement and reasonable assumptions on plume and prominence geometries, we estimate that the mass density in the dark cavities is at most 20% of the visible prominence density, implying that a single large plume could supply up to 1% of the mass of a typical quiescent prominence. We present a detailed investigation of the dynamical behavior of emerging magnetic flux using 3-dimensional MHD numerical simulation. A magnetic flux tube with a lefthanded twist, initially placed below the photosphere, emerges into the solar atmosphere. This leads to a dynamical expansion of emerging field lines as well as an injection of magnetic energy and magnetic helicity into the atmosphere. The field-aligned distributions of forces and plasma flows show that emerging field lines can be classified as either expanding field lines or undulating field lines. A key parameter determining the type of emerging field line is an aspect ratio of its shape (the ratio of height to footpoint distance). The emergence generates not only vertical flows but also horizontal flows in the photosphere, both of which contribute to injecting magnetic energy and magnetic helicity. The contributions of vertical flows are dominant at the early phase of flux emergence, while horizontal flows become a dominant contributor later. The emergence starts with a simple dipole structure formed in the photosphere, which is subsequently deformed and fragmented, leading to a quadrapolar magnetic structure.

We performed a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation using a nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) in solar active region 11158 to clarify the dynamics of an X2.2-class solar flare. We found that the NLFFF never shows the drastic dynamics seen in observations, i.e., it is in stable state against the perturbations. On the other hand, the MHD simulation shows that when the strongly twisted lines are formed at close to the neutral line, which are produced via tether-cutting reconnection in the twisted lines of the NLFFF, consequently they erupt away from the solar surface via the complicated reconnection. We present the results from three-dimensional MHD simulations of a magnetic flux tube emerging through the solar photosphere. The simulation is initialized with a straight tube of twisted magnetic field located in the upper convection zone. Buoyancy effects drive an arched segment of the tube upward through the photospheric layer and into the corona. Matter drains from the coronal field, which thereafter undergoes a rapid expansion. The coronal magnetic field formed in this manner exhibits outer poloidal field lines that resemble a potential arcade and inner toroidal field lines that emerge after the tube axis, forming sigmoid structure. The simulations suggest that the neutral-line shear and sigmoidal field arise as a natural by-product of flux emergence.
