The research aims to study and experimentally verify the effectiveness of the use of the Quizlet computer-based flashcard program for teaching future air traffic controllers (ATCs) profession-related vocabulary. In this research, we applied a mixed-method research design. The sample of the experiment participants was 57 first-year students majoring in “Aviation transport”. To evaluate the efficiency of Quizlet incorporation into aviation English learning, we used tests, speaking activities, observations, and questionnaires (the former two to assess passive and active vocabulary knowledge and the latter to evaluate the students` engagement and motivation). The empirical data proved Quizlet to be an effective vocabulary learning tool that positively influences students` proficiency in speaking skills and interest in learning aviation English. Based on the obtained findings, we claim vocabulary acquisition to be the basis for foreign language learners` general language proficiency contributing to the development of voice communication skills. An important conclusion is made on the need to include in aviation English courses the intentional vocabulary learning component implying explicit vocabulary teaching, which then should be complemented with speaking practice and incidental vocabulary acquisition techniques. The research findings can be implied in aviation English and foreign language teaching presenting an experimental verification of computer-based flashcard program efficiency in the language learning process.
Flight safety is an integral part of air transportation. Flight accidents are highly unlikely to appear but most of them are caused by the human factor. The aircrew training system for abnormal operations relies on integrated aircraft simulator-based exercises. Crew needs to be trained not to degrade piloting technique quality when facing increased psychophysiological tension. Therefore, methods evaluating the characteristics of ergatic aircraft control systems, warning systems for deterioration due to failures in avionics systems, piloting technique quality, and abnormal operation algorithms are necessary. An analysis of the bank angle has revealed that there are hidden increased tension manifestations in the human operator expressed in the transition of the flight parameter variation from a stationary random process to deterministic fluctuations in the form of a sinusoid. The goal of the research is to increase the efficiency of pilots’ training using integrated aircraft simulators based on the design and implementation of statistical data processing algorithms. To achieve the goal of the research, two algorithms for detecting deterministic fluctuations based on the Neyman-Pearson criterion and the optimal Bayesian criterion are developed. The presented algorithms can be used in the integrated simulator software to automate the decision-making process on piloting quality.
Nowadays, the development of adult education as an important lifelong learning component is conditioned not only by the dynamics of social, scientific and technological progress, changes in the scope and nature of work, increasing leisure time, and opportunities for its rational use but also by the social role of both society and personality. Non-formal youth and adult education is becoming important in the context of ensuring the sustainable and balanced development of society. For the past two decades, adult education as a component of lifelong learning has been a defining goal of education policy in developed countries at the national and international levels. Adult education is considered a social indicator of the state policy human dimension, one of the ways to achieve socio-economic well-being, and a tool for promoting the ideas of the information and knowledge society. The problem of ensuring access to lifelong learning is becoming a priority, and its solution is possible only taking into account the achievements of foreign countries, including European ones, which are reviewed in the article (Austria, Poland, Liechtenstein, France, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Ukraine). The article outlines the European countries` experience in the field of adult education and describes a network of lifelong learning institutions; it is identified strategic directions for the development of continuing education.
The paper traces modern trends in higher education systems transformation in Europe. All the tendencies might be grouped under the same goal: universities should be the basis not only for making students well-educated. The main priorities have been shifted towards enhancing applied professionally oriented knowledge and skills and equipping students with the methodology for continuing professional development. The latter implies lots of self-study. The way to make these ideas come to fruition is to delegate the duties of establishing education standards and qualification requirements from national governmental structures to professional bodies at least to some extent. Professional organizations are obviously much more aware of what an aspiring worker has to be capable of in order to be a good representative of the profession. Despite such experience being new to the vast majority of specializations in most countries, the approach of academic programs being the subject to accreditation by professional bodies and the expansion of degree granting authority to professional institutions is well-established in Canada. Quality assurance procedures and standards here are multilayered. Apart from professional bodies, the system is also comprised of membership in Universities Canada, provincial governments and organizations, internal policies of universities. The hard evidence of effectiveness of combining academic and professional environment into a single whole is the fact that Canadian academic credentials are recognized internationally as the ones certifying quality. Besides, the approach to higher education quality assurance based on professional bodies acting as the main regulator that performs standard setting and approval function is considered to be the one contributing to equipment students with applied knowledge and skills fulfilling the real needs of the chosen occupation. Consequently, partnership between higher education institutions and professional bodies fully corresponds to the modern trends that are currently dominating in future specialists` professional training.
