Abstract-This paper analyzes students' experience with Cogent, a virtual economy system used throughout the 4 years of a B.S. degree in a Technology major. The case study explains the rules of the Cogent system and investigates its effectiveness to motivate students to learn. Using focus groups and interviews, we collected qualitative data from students about their experience and perceptions of Cogent. The results indicate that Cogent played an encouraging and motivational role for these students and suggest potential for the successful design and implementation of meaningful gamification systems to promote student motivation and engagement within an educational context.
Students with attentional problems have difficulty in learning mathematics due to their inability to maintain attention on task. The current study proposed that using images during mathematics instruction would provide stimulation for students with characteristics of an attentional problem (ADHD-I and ADHD-C) and thereby enhance their attention and/or time on task. 2 nd to 4 th grade elementary schools students with and without attentional difficulties participated in the study. The study assumed that those students who use a computer to learn geometry would perform better with: (1) a combination images with Low-level Visual Cues (Images-LVC) and images with Additional Visual Cues (Images-AVC) than no images and (2) Images-AVC than Images-LVC. Different conditions were compared against the control group with no images presented during the instruction Author
Alvin Toffler in his book, "Future Shock", warned of the pressing need to develop strategies intended to cope with technology. He defined the social pressures created by advancing technology and their potentially destructive impact on society. The question his warning poses for educators is simple. Should educators implement coping strategies to help alleviate the potentially destructive pressures advancing technology may have on their discipline (Techno-Stress)? Specifically, this presentation answers yes and is intended to demonstrate a way of surviving the computer graphics hardware and software explosion in engineering and design graphics.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
