Este trabalho é dedicado aos elementos de persuasão presentes no texto da Legenda Áurea (1260-1298) escrita pelo frade dominicano Jacopo de Varazze. Destaca-se o uso retórico de elementos do maravilhoso – principalmente da atuação do Diabo e dos demônios— no texto, com o intuito de convencer os leitores/ouvintes. Trata-se de uma pedagogia sobre o mal que chega aos laicos através da pregação, já que o texto da Legenda é um instrumento utilizado pelos pregadores para transmitir os ensinamentos cristãos.
Este artigo trata da Cristandade latina pós-Reforma e das medidas tomadas pela Igreja através dos cânones do IV Concílio de Latrão (1215), que estabelece não somente uma nova forma de lidar com o pecado, mas também procura definir a figura diabólica. Além disto, é abordado o surgimento, neste contexto, dos Frades Pregadores, que se notabilizam pela reformulação da pregação e por sua inserção nas cidades. Novas formulações doutrinárias e práticas religiosas se estabelecem, dando destaque à atuação do Diabo e às formas de combate-lo. A Ordem Dominicana, nesse sentido, possui um papel central no combate ao mal. Pregadores, confessores e inquisidores, aos Dominicanos cabe alertar, ensinar, combater os demônios e punir os desvios.
Neste artigo oferece-se um panorama sobre a cultura visual que surge na Baixa Idade Média, fundando-se em novos padrões de visualidade. As imagens da Légende Dorée (c.1348- 1500) estão dentro desse contexto, oferecendo-nos, de forma geral, um rico repertório visual sobre os santos. Apresenta-se o conjunto de códices selecionados para estudo e a metodologia de sua composição, além da forma como se dispõem as imagens em relação ao texto: os temas mais frequentes, representações que fogem ou são inspiradas no próprio texto, posição das ilustrações no fólio dentre outros. Questões metodológicas sobre a análise de imagens também são abordadas.
