Analysen sozialer Ungleichheit bleiben meist auf einzelne Nationalstaaten beschränkt und beziehen nur objektive Ungleichheitsindikatoren ein. Selten wird dagegen gefragt, ob das Aufweichen nationalstaatlicher Grenzen zu einer Transnationalisierung wahrgenommener Ungleichheit führt. Mittels einer Analyse der Medienberichterstattung in deutschen Grenzregionen versuchen wir Antworten auf diese Frage zu finden. Sie zeigt, dass grenzüberschreitende Wahrnehmungen sozialer Ungleichheit existieren und für die Einschätzung der Lebenslage der Bürger relevant scheinen-allerdings in regional unterschiedlicher Weise. An den deutschen Grenzen zu Tschechien und Polen wird die schlechte Einkommenslage im Nachbarland als Gefahr für den eigenen Lebensstandard interpretiert. An der deutschen Westgrenze wird die Besserstellung der Nachbarländer hingegen eher als Maßstab präsentiert, auf dessen Basis die Gleichstellung mit den Bürgern der Nachbarländer gefordert wird. 1 Konzeptioneller Rahmen und Fragestellung Soziale Ungleichheit ist, so sinngemäß die Definition von Reinhard Kreckel, die ungleiche Verteilung von Positionen und Gütern zwischen Menschen, welche die Lebenschancen dieser Menschen verbessert bzw. verschlechtert (Kreckel 2004: 17). Soziale Ungleichheit enthält damit ein relationales Element: Es geht um die, so Hradil, "Besser-oder Schlechterstellung" von Menschen bezüglich gesellschaftlich relevanter Güter. Entsprechend bedarf es eines Vergleichsrahmens, innerhalb dessen die Verteilung von Positionen und Gütern bewertet wird (Hradil 2001: 34). Der Vergleichsrahmen selbst ist in der Ungleichheitsforschung aber selten Untersuchungsgegenstand, vielmehr zeichnet sich die sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung zu sozialer Ungleichheit durch zwei Charakteristika aus: 1 Wir danken Sylvia Kämpfer, Ulrich Kohler und Jochen Roose für Kommentare zu diesem Artikel sowie Johanna Zeckau für das Erstellen von Abb. 1.
