With the implementation of the 'bare below the elbows' (BBE) dress policy in hospitals, there has been considerable debate as to how to maintain the professional appearance of doctors, balancing being recognisable and hygienic. Recent articles in the Bulletin have examined this topic. However, we note that very little has been said about female doctors' work wear. Even though women make up 59% of the medical workforce, the focus within these articles was solely on male attire. We therefore decided to undertake our own study to identify public preferences for a female dress code within the hospital setting and how choice of work wear can impact on the patient's perception of his or her doctor.
