ABSTRACTThe objective of the study was to compare the efficiency of the in situ, in vitro and enzymatic (cellulose) techniques in estimating the digestibility of forage with different nutritional quality in sheep. Samples of three qualities of forage were collected: high (rye grass of 2-4 weeks), medium (rye grass of 8 weeks and alfalfa hay), and low (oat straw).
Feed and water were supplied ad libitum. Seventy two male weaned guinea pigs (14 ± 3 days of age) were randomly assigned to 24 rearing boxes (8 per treatment). None statistical difference was found between treatments on body weight gain or carcass yield. There was a better feed intake (total dry mater) in T3 (p<0.05). Groups T1 and T2 showed a better conversion ratio at week 10 (3.18 and 3.31) than T3 supplied with forage (4.01) (p<0.01).
The study evaluated the effect of the fish silage on feed rations for Guinea Pig (Cavia porcellus). Eighty guinea pigs of the Peruvian line (1/2 blood) , weaned at 14 ± 3 days of age, were used. The treatments consisted of different levels of fish silage: 0 (D0), 10 (D10), 20 (D20) and 30% (D30). The study lasted 10 weeks and was divided in three stages: 0-42, 42-70 and 0-70 days. Body weight gain and food intake was higher in D10, D20 and D30 as compared to DO (p<0.05), whereas no differences were found between D10, D20 and D30. In all stages, food conversion was higher in D20 and D30. The carcass performance was better in D30 and the economic benefit was better in D20. The organoleptic trial suggested that meat flavor and smell were affected on D20. It was concluded that the use of fish silage in the rations improved the productive performance of the guinea pig, where 20% content was the most appropiate based on organoleptic and economic terms.
The objective of this study was to standardize the enzymatic procedure for estimating the digestibility of forages using the fungal cellulase Penicillium funiculosum, and its comparison with the Tilley and Terry (1963) in vitro digestibility method. The wellknown in vitro digestibility of alfalfa and oat straw were used for the standardization of the technique. Different quality forages from various locations of Peru were used for the comparison between methods. The best enzyme-substrate concentrations were 200 and 250 mg respectively. Both methods were statistically different, being the enzymatic digestibility values lower than the in vitro method ones. The correlation coefficient between methods was 0.987 (p<0.001). The enzymatic digestibility method proved to be a simple and rapid laboratory analysis for the evaluation of forages.
