An almost complete skeleton of a new carnivorous cynodont from the Upper Triassic of Southern Brazil, Trucidocynodon riograndensis gen. nov. et sp. nov., is described. The new taxon is very similar to Ecteninion lunensis Martinez et al. 1996 from Upper Triassic of Argentina (Ischigualasto Formation). Both have an elongated skull, large pterygoid flanges, a well developed orbitosphenoid, a relatively short osseous secondary palate, greatly developed canines and sectorial postcanines with posteriorly directed cusps. However, the new taxon shows some differences relative to E. lunensis such as an open pterygoparoccipital foramen, the posterior opening of the post-temporal foramen enclosed by tabular and squamosal, and upper incisors with serrated cutting edges. The more remarkable features of the postcranium of T. riograndensis are the presence of 32 presacral vertebrae, a greater number than in most of non-mammaliaform cynodonts, the accentuated lumbarisation of the posterior trunk vertebrae and a remarkable morphological gradient in the caudal vertebrae; the femur and humerus show some interesting adaptations suggesting a more upright limb posture. The overall morphology of the astragalocalcaneal complex is similar to that of Diademodon and of the therocephalian Bauria.

We report here on a new prozostrodontian cynodont, Botucaraitherium belarminoi gen. et sp. nov., from the Late Triassic Riograndia Assemblage Zone (AZ) of the Candelária Sequence (Santa Maria Supersequence), collected in the Botucaraí Hill Site, Candelária Municipality, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The new taxon is based on a single specimen (holotype MMACR-PV-003-T) which includes the left lower jaw, without postdentary bones, bearing the root of the last incisor, canine and four postcanines plus one partial crown inside the dentary, not erupted, and two maxillary fragments, one with a broken canine and another with one postcanine. The features of the lower jaw and lower/upper postcanines resemble those of the prozostrodontians Prozostrodon brasiliensis from the older Hyperodapedon AZ and Brasilodon quadrangularis and Brasilitherium riograndensis from the same Riograndia AZ. The inclusion of Botucaraitherium within a broad phylogenetic analysis, positioned it as a more derived taxon than tritylodontids, being the sister-taxon of Brasilodon, Brasilitherium plus Mammaliaformes. Although the new taxon is based on few cranial elements, it represents a additional faunal component of the Triassic Riograndia AZ of southern Brazil, in which small-sized derived non-mammaliaform cynodonts, closely related to the origin of mammaliaforms, were ecologically well succeed and taxonomically diverse.

Candelariodon was originally classified as Eucynodontia incertae sedis and our analysis recovered this taxon deeply nested within Probainognathia, as the sister taxon of Potheriodon plus Prozostrodontia. The lower postcanine dentition of Candelariodon has several apomorphies shared with Prozostrodon, Santacruzgnathus, Brasilodon/Brasilitherium, and some basal mammaliaforms (Morganucodon, Megazostrodon), such as a lingual cingulum with discrete cusps e and g and two distinct morphologies in the tooth row. The reinterpretation of Candelariodon as a probainognatian cynodont more derived than Probainognathus and the rich Brazilian fossil record document an important adaptive radiation of non-mammaliaform prozostrodontians and closely related forms prior to the origin of the mammaliaform clade.

In this contribution, new specimens of the tritheledontid eucynodont Irajatherium hernandezi, from the Late Triassic (Caturrita Formation) of southern Brazil, are analyzed. The new material provides significant information about incisor count, canine size and shape, basicranial morphology, and other previously unknown aspects of skull and dentition. A cladistic analysis with inclusion of the new data supports the assignment of Irajatherium to Tritheledontidae, basal to Chalimininae and Pachygenelinae. Previously unknown characters of Irajatherium revealed by the new material include: the presence of three lower incisors; the first lower incisor is enlarged; the presence of large upper and lower canines with deep paracanine fossa on the maxilla; almost complete upper and lower postcanine tooth row with a pattern similar to that of other tritheledontids (e.g. Pachygenelus and Chaliminia); there is a conspicuous crest on the inner surface of the maxilla for the attachment of the inferred maxillary turbinates; partially confluent jugular foramen and fenestra rotunda within the jugular fossa, separated by a finger-like projection of the posterolateral wall of the opisthotic; and hypoglossal foramina located outside the jugular fossa. Irajatherium is a key taxon for understanding the early evolution of ictidosaurs, a group of cynodonts closely related to mammaliaforms, during the cynodont-mammal transition from the Late Triassic to Early Jurassic.

-In this paper, we describe new postcranial remains of Chiniquodon cf. C. theotonicus, a chiniquodontid cynodont from the Therapsid Cenozone, from the Santa Maria Formation, Middle Triassic of Southern Brazil. In the described specimen are preserved almost all presacral vertebrae, the sacral vertebrae, an incomplete pelvic girdle, the left femur, and two metapodials. Some of these bones show slight differences relative to those already described for C. theotonicus, especially in the femur and in the pelvic girdle. Since the species can actually include the materials attributed to the genera Probelesodon (except from P. sanjuanensis) and Belesodon, however, these differences may represent normal ontogenetic variation in the species rather than being of taxonomically diagnostic value.Key words: Triassic, Santa Maria Formation, Brazil, Chiniquodontidae, Chiniquodon, postcranial skeleton.RESUMO -Neste trabalho são descritos novos elementos pós-cranianos de Chiniquodon cf. C. theotonicus, um cinodonte chiniquodontídeo da Cenozona de Therapsida, da Formação Santa Maria, Triássico Médio do sul do Brasil. No espécime descrito estão preservadas quase todas as vértebras pré-sacrais, as vértebras sacrais, a cintura pélvica incompleta, o fêmur esquerdo e dois metapodiais. Alguns destes ossos apresentam pequenas diferenças em relação àqueles previamente descritos para C. theotonicus, especialmente no fêmur e na cintura pélvica. Uma vez que esta espécie pode, na realidade, incluir os materiais atribuídos aos gêneros Probelesodon (exceto de P. sanjuanensis) e Belesodon, estas diferenças podem representar variações ontogenéticas normais dentro de uma espécie e, assim, não ter grande valor taxonômico. RESUMO-Pela primeira vez, elementos pós-cranianos de Exaeretodon riograndensis, um cinodonte traversodontídeo da Cenozona de Rhynchosauria da Formação Santa Maria, Neotriássico do sul do Brasil, são descritos e comparados com E. frenguellii e outros cinodontes não-mamalianos. O material inclui parte da coluna vertebral, radio, ulna e elementos da cintura pélvica. As diferenças mais significativas em relação a E. frenguellii estão na morfologia e nas dimensões do arco neural do atlas, na presença de intercentros em vértebras cervicais posteriores ao áxis e na ausência da dilatação do ápice do espinho neural das vértebras truncais. A morfologia da região sacral da coluna, do rádio, da ulna e da cintura pélvica são concordantes com o observado em E. frenguellii. A comparação com outros táxons de cinodontes não-mamalianos permite a observação da nítida evolução em mosaico do esqueleto pós-craniano destes animais: E. riograndensis mostra alguns caracteres similares a outros Cynognathia (grupo ao qual pertence), enquanto outros são mais próximos aos observados em alguns Probainognathia (incluindo mamíferos), como a natureza mais avançada do complexo atlas-áxis.
