O Diabetes é uma doença metabólica crônica de origem múltipla, com elevado índice de casos, que o torna um grande problema de saúde mundial. A utilização de tratamento terapêutico alternativo utilizando plantas medicinais tem se tornado uma opção viável na prevenção no estágio inicial da doença. Existem muitos relatos na literatura do uso de extrato de Salacia para redução dos altos níveis glicêmicos. Para melhor entender o que tem sido publicado a respeito do uso medicinal do bacupari, principalmente seu uso como hipoglicemiante, esse trabalho pretende realizar uma análise cienciometrica, descrevendo aspectos quantitativos sobre a produção científica do uso do bacupari como planta medicinal, as suas formas de utilização e propriedades terapêuticas. Os dados foram obtidos pelo PUBMED e após o levantamento desses dados resultou-se em uma totalidade de 221 publicações para a análise descritiva do uso da salacia/bacupari, sendo 110 publicações sobre uso terapêutico, delas 47 analisaram o uso terapêutico hipoglicemiante. Conclui-se que a salacia/bacupari tem efetividade nos casos de hiperglicemia, pois possui fitoativos em suas raízes, caules e folhas que atuam na diminuição da glicemia, por meio da inibição da alfa-glicosidase.
