Market outlet choice for small holder onion producers is mandatory, since onion crop is a perishable horticultural crop. This study was aimed at assessing determinant of market outlet choice by smallholder onion farmers in Fogera District of Ethiopia. A stratified random sampling technique was employed, to select 150 onion producers in the study area. Multivariate probit model was employed to identify the factor affecting onion market outlet choices. The result of multivariate probit model showed that literacy status, owning transport facility, livestock holding, onion yield and access to extension service significantly influenced the choice of onion market outlet. The common underlying factors of market channel choice were also identified. Based on the results, the study recommended that the government and stakeholders should focus on strengthening the existing of formal and informal education, onion production system, improving extension system, strengthening the existing ruraltelecom and rural-urban infrastructure development and improving crop-livestock production.
Onion crop is one of the most important commercialized horticultural crops among smallholder farmers because they derive benefits such as income, source of food, health care and rural employment. In developing countries like Ethiopia, most smallholder farmers are characterized by poor market participation due to lack of market information, price volatility related to seasonality of supply, and poor performance of the vegetable market. This study has identified household level determinants of the output side commercialization decision and level of commercialization in onion crops in Fogera district of Amhara Region in Northwestern Ethiopia. A stratified random sampling technique was employed to select 150 onion producers from four sample kebeles in the study area. Both descriptive and econometric methods were used to analyze the data. Heckman's two step sample selection model was applied to analyze the determinants of the commercialization decision and level of commercialization in the onion market. The first-stage probit model estimation results revealed that age of household head, literacy status, distance to nearest urban center, access to training, onion yield, access to extension service and contract marketing affected probability of market participation. Second-stage Heckman selection estimation indicated that livestock holding, literacy status, land allotted to onion, non/off farm income, onion yield, ownership of communication device, contract marketing, agro ecology and marketing group significantly determined volume of onion supply. The results also showed that most of the factors determining decision of participation in onion farm also determine level of participation, suggesting that the two decisions were made simultaneously by onion producers. The study recommends that local and regional government strength formal and informal education, strengthening the existing onion production system, encouraging the use of labour saving technologies, improving extension system, strengthening the existing rural-telecom and rural-urban infrastructure development, and improving crop-livestock production.
Soil is a crucial and precious natural resource that govern numerous ecological processes. However, in Ethiopia particularly in north Gondar zone, soil erosion is a severe problem and a major cause of the decline of agricultural productivity. The adoption and diffusion of soil and water conservation practices (SWC), as a way to tackle this challenge, has become an important issue in the development policy agenda in the zone. Therefore, this study was to identify factors affecting Soil conservation investments in the North Gondar zone. Data was collected through interviewed schedule, filed observation and focus group discussion. The multistage sampling technique was employed to select 206 sample households. Both descriptive and econometrics model was used to analyze the collected data. A multivariate profit (MPV) model was used to analyze the effect of demographic, socioeconomic, market, institutional and biophysical related factors on the interdependent investment decisions of SWC practices using household survey. The MPV model analysis indicates that farmers invest a combination of practices at parcel level by considering substitution and complementarity effects of the practices. The results also revealed that age of household heads, literacy status of household heads, off-farm activity, distance of farmlands from homesteads, tropical livestock unit, and access to training were influence farmers’ investments in SWC practices. The overall results indicate that the identified physical, socioeconomic, and institutional factors influence promote or hinder investments in SWC practice so, policymakers should take into consideration these various factors in designing and implementing SWC policies and Programmers.
The overarching aim of this paper is to examine empirical findings on the arena of consumers' behavior and attitude towards intake of street-foods (SFs) and fast foods (FFs) status as well as associated risks of consumption in China. Presently, consuming SFs and FFs have become a popular trend and is counted as the manifestation of modernity in most fast growing countries, for instance, China. The SFs and FFs are believed to be a panacea to the major socio-economic problems for countries having a large population. Over one-quarter of the century FFs and SFs become rapidly expanded in China through the quick service provision of already prepared foods with reasonable prices and source of employment for swarming open country and city inhabitants end to end to its supply. FFs and SFs are the most preferred by consumers because of safety issue, reasonable price, ready-made nature, easily accessible, portability, and so on. Concurrently, the nutritional and health concerns in China revealed that the government is very committed to quarantine and certifies FFs and SFs of food safety and public health, particularly after melamine was detected in milk in the year 2008. This later stimulated the Chinese regime to put into practice food safety law (FSL) in 2009 next to food hygiene law (FHL). FFs and SFs consumers in China are very conscious of food quality and give credit for safety than purchasing prices. Broadly speaking, most examined the papers indulged that FF and SF choice rely on 'safety first' by consumers in China. To sustain vendors stock and satisfy consumers' demand for SF and FF, avoiding health risks, change in the existing perception and trust building is a priority issue.
