ABSTRACTThe use of hydrodynamic models to determine stream discharges has been grown in recent years due to the problems regarding the use of rating curve method for discharge estimating. This study aims to develop a method for determining discharges in open channels using multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (NSGA-II) and free surface level measurements associated with a hydrodynamic model. Data obtained from experiments on a laboratory experimental channel have been used for model calibration and validation. NSGA-II optimization algorithm presented excellent results and Nash-Sutcliffe coefficients greater than 0.99 have been obtained for both calibration and validation of the hydrodynamic model. Discharges calculated by the hydrodynamic model showed variations of up to 150% for the same level when compared to the discharges estimated by the rating curve, which showed that the use of rating curve for discharge measurements during transient flows results in high errors.
Monitoring flow in channels is difficult, expensive, and potentially dangerous; hence, alternatives minimizing these factors are sought and indirect methods to measure the flow based on water-level information, among others, are employed. Ultrasonic sensors along with Arduino are widely used to monitor levels in reservoirs; however, the accuracy of this method in turbulent flow regimes has not been evaluated. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the level of open channel flows using a combination of Arduino and ultrasonic sensors whilst considering turbulence. Additionally, we statistically compared the simultaneous measurements of levels obtained using five ultrasonic sensors with those of five rulers filmed individually along an artificial channel, for four permanent and two transient regimes. The results showed that the errors in measurements increased with increasing turbulence. These errors were within the range of hydraulic measurements (< 0.020 m), indicating that the procedure is valid for experienced conditions. Therefore, the combination of Arduino and ultrasonic sensors is a technically and economically viable alternative. However, calibrating and validating the sensors for distances greater than 0.400 m should be performed with care because the bench tests performed in static conditions were limitedly accurate in measuring distances greater than 0.200 m.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to define the flood inundation area of the stream Macambira to implement a linear park. This stream is the subject of a project called Urban Environmental Program-Macambira Anicuns, which aims to transform the banks of these two streams in a public park for the city of Goiania. The stream in question, not different from the others in the urban area, is currently degraded and the floodplain areas occupied by disorderly houses, shops, small industries and plantations. To define the maximum perimeter of the park, its area of coverage, a hydrodynamic study was necessary with the delimitation of flood area of Macambira's urban stream margins, in Goiania, using high-resolution topography and HEC-RAS software. Overall, the flood of band obtained for the study area was flooded in the natural channel of the stream. However, there are overflowing in some points, reaching the streets and places of populated areas, reaching up to 70 meters from the natural channel. Thus, the modeling HEC-RAS allowed contemplate the current diagnosis of the drainage system Stream Macambira, focusing on the hydraulic behavior of the existing drainage channel, providing the basis for the project, so that we can establish effective intervention strategies more appropriate for each situation.
ABSTRACT: As rainfall affects directly estimations of runoff, this study focused on runoff analysis resulting from the application of a rainfall-runoff model based on tanks - Tank Model. To this end two historical series of precipitation on Manoel Alves River Basin, State of Tocantins, Brazil, have been used. The model parameters were obtained by automatic calibration by using two different optimization methods (nonlinear programming and genetic algorithms) as well as two different intervals for time series data (monthly and daily) in order to compare the results. The results have shown that the simulated data for monthly resolutions were more consistent than those ones obtained for daily data when comparing the observed runoff. The study demonstrated that it is not advisable to use daily data for the calculations of streamflow forecasting by Tank Model. The set of estimated parameters was considered satisfactory, which can enable modeling efficiently. The study could contribute to the generation of reliable synthetic discharge series, which can allow simulations of reservoir behavior for various water use scenarios mainly in areas with poor series data (lack of data or long gaps in data discharge series), which is very common in Brazil.
River discharge data are critical to elaborating on engineering projects and water resources management. Discharge data must be precise and collected with good temporal resolution. To elaborate on a more accurate database, this paper aims to quantify the uncertainty generated while applying Bayesian inference through the GLUE and DREAM methods. Both methods were used to estimate hydraulic parameters and compare between them with Manning’s equation. Throughout the statistical analysis, the uncertainties in the application of the models are used to determine the parameters of Manning’s roughness coefficient and bed slope. The validation was made via a comparison of the calculated maximum and minimum discharges, and the observed flow available at HidroWeb. In conclusion, both methods estimated the hydraulic parameters well, but a higher relative deviation was seen in the intervals with smaller calculated discharges; DREAM appears to be more accurate than GLUE, once the relative deviation in GLUE became greater.
