Single-use plastics are a matter of convenience in everyday life, with the majority allocated to packaging production. However, it comes with a high environmental price as its mass recycling is challenging due to the heterogeneity of composition, contaminations of different kinds, and degradation caused by service and processing. This study aims to ascertain the impact of removing contaminants from post-consumer recycled polypropylene (rPP) on its degradation and properties by implementing a systematic approach for decontamination by washing. Four lots of recycled plastics with different degrees of contamination were evaluated via Fourier transform infrared, melt flow indexer, and differential scanning calorimetry and tested for tensile strength. Degradation of the rPP was manifested by the deterioration in ductility, resulting in 14.58% elongation at break (unwashed rPP) compared with 191.41% (virgin PP)) and a significant reduction in oxidation induction time. In the unwashed rPP sample, a wave intensity peak at 1730 cm−1, assigned to the saturated C = 0 stretch of the carbonyl functional group, was detected. This peak was gradually disappearing with an increase in the cleaning efficiency of rPP, highlighting the role of contaminants as degradation catalysts. The cold-washing method showed similar processing and mechanical performance improvement results compared with the other washing methods, while being more environmentally friendly and energy efficient.
In the present study, two photocatalytic graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) modified TiO2 materials thermally treated at 300 °C (T300_GO and T300_CNT, respectively) were tested and revealed their conversion efficiency of nitrogen oxides (NOx) under simulated solar light, showing slightly better results when compared with the commercial Degussa P25 material at the initial concentration of NOx of 200 ppb. A chemical kinetic model based on the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism was employed to simulate micropollutant abatement. Modeling of the fluid dynamics and photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) kinetics was accomplished with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach for modeling single-phase liquid fluid flow (air/NOx mixture) with an isothermal heterogeneous surface reaction. A tuning methodology based on an extensive CFD simulation procedure was applied to adjust the kinetic model parameters toward a better correspondence between simulated and experimentally obtained data. The kinetic simulations of heterogeneous photo-oxidation of NOx carried out with the optimized parameters demonstrated a high degree of matching with the experimentally obtained NOx conversion. T300_CNT is the most active photolytic material with a degradation rate of 62.1%, followed by P25-61.4% and T300_GO-60.4%, when irradiated, for 30 min, with emission spectra similar to solar light.
The work reported here intends to identify and mitigate the causes for failure in a plastic faucet holder, a part of an integral float faucet with a well-documented history of fracture occurrence. A methodology for the identification of hidden internal defects in plastic parts and the elaboration of the required corrective actions towards quality improvement is, therefore, presented. Firstly, part defects were identified via injection moulding process numerical simulation. The latter has enabled the prediction of an excessive volumetric shrinkage at the core of the faucet holder, highlighting the presence of internal voids and, hence, the possible deterioration of the load-bearing capacity. The supposition was later confirmed by X-ray topography scans. Part reengineering, consisting of localized thickness reduction, was the option chosen for decreasing the high shrinkage at the core. For validation purposes, structural analyses were carried out, with and without accounting for the injection moulding processing history. The results obtained during part structural analysis have enabled us to conclude that, when taking into account the residual stresses generated during injection moulding, the analysis more closely reflects the experimental data and allows us to implicitly envisage the propensity to fracture. Moreover, the part modifications, undertaken during the faucet holder reengineering, led to the reduction of the cumulative (processing and imposed by load) stresses by 50%, when compared to the original design analysed.
Injection molding (IM) is the most widespread and economical way to obtain high-quality plastic components. The process depends, however, to a great extent, on the quality and efficiency of the injection molding tools. Given the nature of the IM process, the temperature control system (TCS), its design, and its efficiency are of utmost importance for achieving the highest possible quality of plastic parts in the shortest possible time. For that reason, the implementation of additive manufacturing (AM) in novel IM temperature control strategies has gained considerable interest in academia and industry over the years. Conformal cooling channels (CCCs) are TCSs that have already demonstrated great potential when compared to conventional gun-drilling systems. Nevertheless, despite the recent advances, the design of these systems is still an open field of study and requires additional research in both aspects deemed as critical: thermo-mechanical models and the application of optimization techniques. This review paper tackles all the relevant, available papers on this topic, highlighting thermo-mechanical models developed by TCS designers and the optimization techniques used. The articles were thoroughly analyzed, and key points on the design of new TCS and new opportunities were identified.
