In a very uncertain and competitive economy, companies have to cope with external constraints such as environmental and social issues, to gain competitive advantage. Over the last thirty years, numerous initiatives have appeared to deal with socio-environmental issues. However, contexts are complex and dynamics. Many authors therefore point out the need to establish a systemic perspective in order to improve the integration of sustainable issues into all company activities: from strategic decision-making to the end of the project. In addition, companies need to reinforce the relationship between general corporate development and eco-design activities. Based on literature review, this paper assumes that the integration of sustainability can be improved by developing a coherent and system approach between strategic, tactical and operational levels. The authors have chosen to demonstrate this assumption by targeting the environmental aspect of sustainability as a first step of their overall research. In this view, this paper proposes a navigation system composed of three modules: strategic, tactical and operational. This navigation system provides some pragmatic roadmaps for integrating environment into the company. Each module is linked to the others by the use of appropriate metrics. Bottom-up and top-down or middle-to-sides strategies are fully supported.To test this proposal, the navigation system is experimented retrospectively into an industrial process from the textile industry. The comparison between the initial situation and the experimental results allows authors to highlights potential environmental improvements. Some recommendations are made to challenges companies to use this navigation system, which argues in favor of environmental improvements.
Product service systems (PSS) are frequently cited as key strategies in the transition towards the circular economy (CE). The main aim of the CE is sustainable development (SD), hence, this paper intends to highlight the importance of considering the territory in the design and implementation of circular PSS strategies for ensuring SD. This research is in an early stage, thus, a literature review was conducted to define the main characteristics of circular PSS, and the concepts of the territory, territorial and local resources from a PSS perspective. In addition, an analysis of the state-of-the-art approach of the integration of the territorial scale in the design and development of PSS strategies was conducted. This study contributes to the understanding of the territory and its relevance in the local value creation in circular PSS strategies. Furthermore, the results highlight the relevant role of collaboration and the importance of intangible resources in the mobilisation of other resources in the design of circular PSS strategies.
Manufacturing companies are urged to take responsibility for their impacts on the environment and on society, to contribute to a more sustainable development. The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has therefore gained a lot of interest in the last decades. The Product Development Process (PDP) is a key activity in the operationalization of CSR in a company. However, little is known about the capabilities needed for companies to integrate and manage their CSR issues in their PDP. Therefore, this article aims at contributing to (1) identifying the capabilities to integrate and manage the CSR issues during the PDP, and (2) providing a maturity model to assess the level of capabilities for the integration of the CSR issues in the PDP. Insofar as CSR aims at contributing to sustainable development, the existing literature on capabilities for integrating sustainability in the PDP has been studied and taken as a basis to identify the capabilities for integrating and managing CSR in the PDP. A maturity model has then been built based on these capabilities. This contribution lays the foundation for a methodology to support companies in the improvement of their maturity level in terms of CSR-PDP interaction.
