O debate sobre a qualidade da educação infantil tem ganhado destaque no cenário nacional e internacional a partir de diferentes projetos políticos que disputam, paradoxalmente, concepções bastante distintas de educação infantil, de sociedade e de criança. Diante disso, por meio da análise da experiência paulistana expressa no documento “Indicadores de Qualidade da Educação Infantil Paulistana”, vigente desde 2013, o presente artigo busca problematizar como a Avaliação Institucional Participativa (AIP) vem sendo aplicada nas unidades educacionais e quais os percursos, desafios e potenciais que permeiam o desenvolvimento dessa modalidade de avaliação na Educação Infantil. As perspectivas teóricas que conduzem estas reflexões se inserem no campo das políticas públicas de avaliação e qualidade da Educação Infantil. Numa abordagem qualitativa, apresentamos uma etnografia realizada no ano de 2018 em um Centro de Educação Infantil da cidade de São Paulo, assumindo como pressuposto basilar o fato de que a implementação de políticas públicas, inevitavelmente, se configura como um dinâmica permeada por tensionamentos e negociações. Todavia, o percurso reflexivo trilhado neste estudo permite-nos afirmar o papel fundamental da AIP para a qualidade da educação infantil, uma vez que promove um movimento contínuo, sistematizado de discussão e materialização do projeto político pedagógico, em diálogo com as diretrizes que orientam a educação infantil no Brasil.
