La Tosferina es una infección que afecta las vías respiratorias altas y es causado por un agente bacteriano que afecta exclusivamente a los seres humanos llamado Bordetella pertussis. El cuadro clínico ocurre en diferentes fases (catarral, paroxística y convalecencia). La similitud con otras patologías, la falta de conocimiento en personal de salud y de reconocimiento en la población general, dificulta la detección temprana de casos y conlleva a diagnosticarla tardíamente con el riesgo de complicaciones. Pese a que existe vacunación con altas coberturas, la tosferina ha reaparecido en la última década en Latinoamérica y Honduras, perjudicando a diferentes grupos etarios y mostrando una alta carga de morbilidad y de mortalidad en caso de no tener un tratamiento adecuado oportuno. Este artículo de revisión pretende proveer al sector salud con conocimiento actualizado sobre prevención, diagnóstico, tratamiento y recomendaciones para el manejo de brotes de tosferina.
