Comenzando por teorizaciones clásicas sobre la violencia en el ámbito político, presentamos en este artículo los resultados de una revisión bibliográfica que tuvo como objetivo identificar y caracterizar los desarrollos actuales en torno a las violencias políticas contemporáneas. Esta revisión abarcó estudios publicados entre los años 2007 a 2016 en formato de artículos en revistas científicas, tesis o libros. Los resultados se agrupan en tres grandes temas: violencias de Estado, violencias de resistencia política y efectos de la violencia política en personas, grupos y sociedades. Para cada uno de ellos presentamos los subtemas que están siendo abordados en las publicaciones consultadas, indicando aportes relevantes e identificando aspectos menos investigados. A la luz de esta revisión, planteamos algunas claves para tener en consideración al estudiar las violencias políticas, que apuntan a sostener que se trata de una categoría socialmente construida e históricamente situada. Finalizamos proponiendo líneas de apertura para continuar esta línea de investigación explorando la posibilidad de analizar las violencias políticas contemporáneas como dispositivos en sentido foucaultiano.
