One type of transportation in industrial companies, for moving raw materials, semi-finished goods or finished goods from their original place to destination can be called as material handling. There are several material handling equipment available for manufacturing industry such as forklift, crane, conveyor, hand truck and trolley. However, not all material handling equipment are appropriate for specific manufacturing such as vise manufacturing. The selection of appropriate and efficient material handling equipment is important for reducing material handling cost. Around 20% of production cost is allocated for material handling activities. Vise consists of several part with different processes and materials. As the result, the flow of materials between processes are high. This paper aims to select appropriate material handling for vise manufacturing. Hassan’s algorithm is used as a method for selecting material handling that consider various factors such as price, time and distances. Four types of material handling namely trolley, hand truck, wheeled rack, and hand pallet, are selected in this paper.
Availability of raw materials is important for maintaining the continuity of production. However, in planning inventory for raw materials, several factors such as availability of warehouse space for raw material, handling cost, order cost, transportation time are used in determining amount of raw material need to be stocked. Vise is important tool to support finishing process such as cutting and grinding. Vise consists of several parts such as base, right clamp body and handle. These parts need to be stored in warehouse to support the manufacturing of vise. Hence, the warehouse space must be adequate to store raw materials for manufacturing vise within certain period of time. This paper aims to demonstrate the calculation of warehouse area based on the material requirements that are calculated based on material removal rate for each process.
Production floor is the core for manufacturing company. The value added activities are mostly performed in the production floor. Several factors influence a productivity of production including technology, skill of labor and production floor layout. The manufacturing company with optimal production floor layout will produce lower material flow which in turn reduce production cycle time and material handling cost. As the result, production floor layout design is necessary particularly for manufacturing with assembly product such as vise manufacturing. Several parts with different processes and materials will require high material flow between machines. If the machines are not arranged properly in production floor, it will increase material flows. This paper aims to demonstrate the design of production floor layout for vise manufacturing using CRAFT (Computerized Relative Allocation Facilities Technique) algorithm. This study produces alternative of production floor layouts by minimizing the distance between machines.
Performance measurement is needed to evaluate the condition of the company. Based on preliminary discussions with the company, the company's performance measurement still focused on the financial aspects and has not carried out a comprehensive performance measurement involving other aspects of the company that is also important to know its performance. So, the company does not know the substantive condition of the company. The purpose of this research is to identify the position by using the Baldrige excellence framework (BEF) so that the company knows its condition and can improve and enhance the company's performance. Baldrige excellence framework used to identify the position of the company using seven criteria, namely leadership, strategy, customers, knowledge management, workforce, operations, and results. After identifying the company's position with the baldrige excellence framework, then analysis is carried out to find the root cause of the problem based on the Baldrige Excellence Framework assessment using a fishbone diagram. The maximum score of the Baldrige Excellence Framework is 1000. Based on the assessment, the results showed that the company was in the Early Result category with a value of 314,25. It means that the company is already at a good early stage to achieve the company's excellent performance.
