Basal cell carcinoma is a local, invasive epidermal neoplasia, the most common type of which is nodular basal cell carcinoma. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the occurrence of basal cell carcinoma, characterizing its distribution in accordance with patients' age, gender, the site of the lesion and its histopathological characteristics. Anatomopathology reports of cases of basal cell carcinoma diagnosed in Criciúma, Santa Catarina, Brazil between June 2005 and June 2007 were analyzed. A descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study was conducted. The majority of patients were females over 40 years of age. Most of the tumors were of the nodular type and were situated on the face. There was ulceration in 27.5%, infiltration in 24.5% and invasion of the deep dermis in 61.8%. Local data must be evaluated in order to emphasize the importance of early diagnosis.
Introduction: Cutaneous melanoma is the most lethal skin cancer and its incidence has significantly increased in recent years. In particular, Florianópolis is the Brazilian capital with the highest incidence of the disease. Objective: To investigate the clinical and sociodemographic profile of patients with cutaneous melanoma treated at a public oncology referral hospital in Florianópolis from 2013 to 2017. Methods: This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study carried out at the Santa Catarina Oncology Research Center (Centro de Pesquisas Oncológicas -CEPON). It included 468 patients diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer (ICD-O, 3 rd edition C44 -skin melanoma) evaluated between 2013 and 2017.Data collection was performed by accessing the hospital cancer registry and electronic and physical medical records. The data were plotted in a Windows Excel spreadsheet and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Results: There was a slight predominance of females, white-skinned, with a mean age of 54.3 years old at the time of diagnosis. The most prevalent primary tumor site was the trunk. Superficial spreading melanoma was the most frequent condition, and ulceration was absent in most cases. Clinical stage IV was the most common, and lungs and bronchi were the main metastasis sites. The most performed treatment was wide local excision and the most widely used systemic therapy was chemotherapy. Conclusion: This study characterized the sociodemographic and clinical profile of patients diagnosed with cutaneous melanoma and treated at a referral hospital in the Brazilian capital with the highest skin cancer rates.
Giant-cell tumor is a relatively rare neoplasia, benign but locally aggressive, that causes significant bone destruction with predilection for epiphyseal and metaphyseal regions of long bones and the spine. Definitive treatment is surgical, with complete tumoral resection followed by autograft, homograft, arthrodesis, unconventional endoprostheses or methylmethacrylate. In most cases, surgery is accompanied by high morbidity and variable recurrence rates, depending on the site, size and type of surgical intervention.Denosumab, a RANKL inhibitor, acts by decreasing tumoral osteoclastic activity and is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treatment of GCT when surgery is not possible or when it is associated with high morbidity. This report of cases is based on the review of medical records from the Ambulatory Service for Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA), aiming to show the experience of the Service with the use of denosumab for neoadjuvant purposes.
