A automedicação em idosos se torna cada vez mais complexa pelo motivo da idade avançada e o quadro de saúde que esse paciente se encontra. Designada pelo uso de medicamentos para tratar sintomas ou doenças sem a prescrição de um profissional da saúde devidamente capacitado. É uma realidade na sociedade brasileira e também um problema na saúde pública, pois poderá ocasionar dano para a saúde dos cidadãos, podendo gerar a morte do mesmo. A prática da automedicação inapropriada pode acarretar consequências negativas, como: enfermidades iatrogênicas, e mascaramento de doenças evolutivas. Os idosos, talvez pela razão de serem os que mais sofrem com as doenças, são os que mais utilizam uma maior quantidade de medicamentos sem prescrição. Os mesmos, consomem em média de dois a cinco fármacos diariamente, sendo os mais frágeis a efeitos adversos e a interações medicamentosas. Sendo assim, tornando-se os mais aptos à automedicação. O presente estudo tem como objetivo destacar os fatores de risco que estão relacionados ao uso irracional de medicamentos em pessoas idosas, e a importância dos cuidados farmacêuticos frente a este ato. Trata-se de uma revisão de literatura narrativa, de caráter descritivo e exploratório, realizada a busca por meio das referências dos artigos. A revisão da literatura é, de maneira geral, a revisão das pesquisas e das discussões de outros autores sobre o tema. A pesquisa mostra a maneira como os idosos utilizam seus medicamentos, demonstrando os perigos que a automedicação traz, e a importância do profissional farmacêutico frente ao uso correto de medicamentos.
