Fridays for Future zieht seit dem Beginn im Jahr 2018 viele junge Menschen auf die Straße, die für mehr Klimaschutz protestieren. Die weltweite Bewegung organisiert sich vor allem über soziale Medien; sie ermöglichen die Verbindung zu den Anhänger*innen der Demonstrationen und bieten herabgesenkte Beteiligungshürden. Doch wen genau erreichen die sozialen Medien innerhalb der Bewegung - und wer partizipiert und wie? Zur Beantwortung dieser Frage wurde eine quantitative Online-Befragung von Fridays-for-Future-Beteiligten durchgeführt (n = 219). Basierend auf einer hierarchischen Clusteranalyse werden anhand der individuellen Identifikation mit der Bewegung, der Online-Beteiligung und des Klimawandelproblembewusstseins vier Gruppen charakterisiert: die verbundenen Besorgten, die besorgten Aktivist*innen, die gehemmten Besorgten und die vereinzelten Unbesorgten. Die vergleichsweise junge Stichprobe sowie die Gruppe der vereinzelten Unbesorgten könnte ein Hinweis darauf sein, dass soziale Medien als niedrigschwelliger Einstieg in die soziale Bewegung genutzt werden.
