O Acidente Vascular Encefálico (AVE) é considerado um déficit neurológico decorrente da oclusão vascular, atingindo em sua maioria a população idosa e apresentando como fatores de risco idade, sexo, hipertensão arterial e tabagismo. O presente estudo objetivou traçar o perfil epidemiológico das internações e óbitos por AVE no estado da Paraíba no ano de 2016, levando em consideração as variáveis de mês, faixa etária, sexo e tempo de internação. Trata-se de estudo epidemiológico, retrospectivo, observacional do tipo ecológico, de delineamento transversal. Foram utilizados dados retirados do DATASUS e analisados através de estatística descritiva utilizando o programa Excel 2013. Observou-se no estudo um maior índice de internação no mês de abril (10%) e óbitos em maio (13,71%); com relação a faixa etária constatou-se que indivíduos maiores de 80 anos foram mais acometidos (29,14%), tendo o sexo feminino apresentado mais internações (51%) e óbitos (54%) que o masculino; já o mês de janeiro possui o maior tempo de internação (8,6 dias). As informações epidemiológicas sobre internações e óbitos por AVE são essenciais para o planejamento da oferta de serviços de saúde, acompanhamento, cuidados específicos e redução deste tipo de agravo, visto seus altos índices no estado da Paraíba.Palavras-chave: AVE, fatores de risco, internação, perfil epidemiológico.
