Bromine radical-mediated cyclopropylcarbinyl-homoallyl rearrangement of alkylidenecyclopropanes was effectively accomplished by C-C bond formation with allylic bromides, which led to the syntheses of 2-bromo-1,6-dienes. A three-component coupling reaction comprising alkylidenecyclopropanes, allylic bromides, and carbon monoxide also proceeded well to give 2-bromo-1,7-dien-5-ones in good yield.
The regioselective radical bromoallylation of allenes proceeded efficiently in the presence of AIBN as a radical initiator to give 2-bromo-substituted 1,5-dienes in excellent yields. The addition of a bromine radical took place regioselectively onto the central carbon of allenes generating a stable allyl radical, which underwent addition/β-fragmentation reactions with allylbromides. The products could be further functionalized by Pd-catalyzed coupling reactions.
The bromine-radical-mediated allylation reaction of aldehydes was studied. In the presence of V-65 as radical initiator, the reaction of aldehydes with allyl bromides gave β,γ-unsaturated ketones in good yields (13 examples, 45–84%). The reaction is triggered by hydrogen abstraction from the aldehyde by bromine radical to form an acyl radical, which undergoes an SH2′-type addition–elimination reaction with allyl bromides to give coupling products with liberation of bromine radical. Three-component coupling reactions comprising aldehydes, electron-deficient alkenes, and methallyl bromide also proceeded to give δ,ε-unsaturated ketones.
Radical vinylation of 1,3-dioxolanes and N-acylpyrrolidines using vinyl bromides with an electron-withdrawing substituent proceeded well to give the vinylated products.
