The effect of warm rolling and annealing processes on the microstructure, microtexture, and mechanical properties of a 2205 duplex stainless steel is investigated in this work. To evaluate the microstructure, scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron backscatter diffraction are used as the main techniques. The mechanical properties are assessed through tensile tests. A transition from a bamboo type into a pearl structure is observed as the thickness reduction increases. Furthermore, the ferrite phase presents a weakening of the α‐fiber (<011>//rolling direction, RD) and a development of γ‐fiber (<111>//normal direction, ND), whereas the austenite has a reduction in the intensity of the {110}<112> brass component and a strengthening of the {110}<001> Goss and {112}<111> copper components. Multistage work hardening behavior is observed by Jaoul–Crussard analysis, which indicates the presence of secondary deformation mechanisms during the plastic deformation of the steel. Post‐deformation SEM and TEM results reveal the formation of α′ and ε‐martensite at deformed regions. The orientation relationship that develops between γ‐ and ε‐martensite is Shoji–Nishiyama (S–N) <110>γ//<2110>ε.

AbstractResearch labs focused on welding metallurgy require the control of the major parameters of arc welding to obtain satisfactory results. Ferritic stainless steels (FSS) are largely used due to its relatively low cost and atmospheric corrosion resistance. However, the lack of phase transformation on solid state during solidification implies to these steels certain weldability limitations. In this context, a low cost mechanized autogenous GTAW device with controlled welding speed was developed and validated, obtaining suitable conditions of control and repeatability, to evaluate the influence of welding parameters on the solidification mode of AISI 430 FSS. It was observed that for lower welding speeds and equal current values, elongated grains were formed at the centerline of the weld parallel to the welding direction. The increase in current and speed values produced columnar dendritic structures inside the grains, as a result of the greater instability caused at the weld pool. The effects of mechanical vibration and preheating at the grain structure were also analyzed in order to investigate their influence on grain refinement. The application of mechanical vibration resulted in a more refined and homogeneous structure on the weld metal.
Major improvements in new advanced high strength steels, especially related to microstructural features, have been made by the steel sector to access the trade-off between strength and ductility. In this context, the present study provides a detailed analysis of the microstructure of a cold rolled steel with a minimum tensile strength of 980 MPa, which possesses superior elongation when compared to other conceptions of steels from the same strength level. The annealing process was simulated in a Gleeble machine, and the microstructural characterization was done using optical and scanning electron microscopy, EBSD and XRD analysis. Austenite decomposition, using dilatometric test, and mechanical properties were also evaluated. The steel characterization revealed a microstructure consisting of ferrite matrix with martensite islands and retained austenite particles, in a fraction equivalent to that of conventional TRIP steels, dispersed throughout. The carbon content in the austenite, however, was less than 1.0% w/w, which results in a relatively low stability. Therefore, the increase in strain hardening capacity enabled by the deformation-induced transformation of austenite to martensite produces increased ductility during straining, distinguishing the analyzed material from other steels of the same strength level.
