Teamwork is considered one of the most important skills in engineering. Given the complexity of engineering problems, companies use large multidisciplinary teams to effectively solve them. The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of civil engineering students in a senior design course working in large teams solving a real problem. Data were collected qualitatively using semi-structured interviews and were analyzed using thematic analysis procedures. Results are provided around four major topics: the accomplishment of the students, the challenges they faced, the strategies they used to succeed, and the main differences they experienced by working in large teams vs. working in small teams.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
