Cet article se propose de revisiter l'histoire de l'internationalisation des banques marocaines sous un angle différent, peu exploré par les récents travaux de recherche. Notre analyse met l'accent sur le déploiement du modèle de la banque universelle dont le succès a favorisé l'ouverture des groupes bancaires marocains sur l'Afrique. Au-delà des motivations économiques habituellement avancées, nous croyons que l'internationalisation des banques marocaines visait prioritairement à sauvegarder les intérêts des actionnaires. Ces derniers faisaient face à un risque de dépréciation des valorisations boursières des banques cotées. À l'issue de ce processus d'internationalisation qui a duré plus d'une décennie, les banques marocaines se distinguent brillamment en offrant sur le long terme, l'une des meilleures rentabilités boursières du secteur bancaire mondial. Ce constat atteste de la pertinence du modèle de développement qui repose essentiellement sur un savoir-faire managérial de plus d'un siècle d'existence. Classification JEL : F23, G21, O16, O55.
