Serum lipid peroxides, lipids, blood pressure, body mass index, and dietary intake in 190 urban men were compared with 190 age-matched rural men. Significantly higher levels of lipid peroxides, serum cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides were seen in urban men, compared with rural men. In rural men, serum lipid peroxides were related negatively to age; the same was observed in the 70 + y age group in the urban population. All the lipid constituents were related positively to age in both populations. There were statistically significant correlations between lipid peroxides and serum cholesterol and triglycerides in the urban men. The marked elevation of lipid peroxides and lipids in urban men may be the result of urbanization, including exposure to environmental pollutants.
Esterase-D phenotypes have been determined electrophoretically among the two regional groups of the Yanadi tribe of Andhra Pradesh in South India. The identified esterase-D2 (EsD2) gene frequencies among the coastal, interior and pooled Yanadis are 0.4320, 0.3562 and 0.3989, respectively.
The ABO and Rh (D) blood groups have been examined in 568 individuals of 4 endogamous groups, viz, Mala, Yerukula, Kapu and Vadagalai Ayangar Brahmin. In the ABO blood group system, all the other groups except for the Yerukula show the general Asiatic trend (O > B > A). All individuals examined among the Vadagalai Ayangar Brahmins were Rh (D)-positive. Other populations show a low frequency of d allele.
Total cholesterol level is estimated in different types of human placentae (normal, stillborn and abortion cases). The total cholesterol level is found to be higher in abortion and stillborn cases than in normals. However, the differences between the mean values do not reach the 5% level of statistical significance. The probable reason for this trend is discussed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
